If you can roll the window down, maybe you use a thin metal rod to move the linkages from inside the door (kind of like when you lock your keys inside). Probably not the easiest thing, but it's all I can think of.

If you have the panel off, you should definitely be able to open it. Find the rod that actuates the latch, and push on it. I've never looked inside an XJ door, but I've done it like this on several other vehicles.

encountered the same prob in my 93 xj, turned out the pin that controls the door lock was broken. Had to take off the panel and with a screwdriver and flashlight closely examine the passenger door to see how it operated. i was able to use a screwdriver and pry on the inside of the latch part that controlled the door lock while working the handle. hard to explain but very easy to fix. Replaced the whole latch assembly with a new junkyard unit

I just had a similar problem with my '95. My problem ended up being that the latch still worked fine, but it would not unlock. So it just acted like my door was locked all the time. I replaced it with a latch off of a parts Jeep. (I practically have my own junkyard!) The latch assembly out of the rear doors appear to be the same, but you would not have had a good way of latching the rear door then.

The most difficult part of replacing the latch is unhooking and rehooking the door handle and lock rods. Try to be patient, have a small bright flashlight, and maybe some various size/shaped pliers. That should make things go more smoothly. Also, lubricate the new latch thoroughly as well as everything in the door when you're done! That will help you in the long run.
