I used punch on top of a long (hardened) concrete nail. I found that a punch was too long as it needed to "curve" because of access to the hole. After the pins were out I cleanned up the holes with emery cloth, finito. I use quick-release pins now in place of factory hinge pin's.

Reviving this from the dead, but I wanted to point something out.

The doors do not provide rigidity to the unibody like the rear hatch does, however the trouble comes in if you do not have sliderz and you bang up the rockers. The debate could go on forever, but for light to moderate wheeling I would say you're safe with the doors off temporarily. I had mine off for a few days at GSE and always cruise without them on my ZJ (same unibody) with no problems.

However I did hear of 2 XJ's at Moab a few years back who had trouble putting them back on. One of the guys supposedly posed for a flex picture in which only one of the front wheels and one of the back wheels were off the ground. He held the position to take some photos and thinks that twisted the uni enough to misalign the door pillars.

Matt

I'm so doing that mod in the spring. I was thinking of getting a second set of doors and cutting them about half way down the door so they are low and a nice arm rest. Maybe they will even have a cup holder.

so if you just put in new pins that are quick release, do you have to take the doors off? if you could do it without taking the doors off, that would eliminate the troubles of having to re align the doors right? could you maybe do a step by step ( 1), 2) ) process to doing this mod? i just wanna make sure i dont mess anything up at all. thanks!@

What do yall think? The cold weather has made me do more thinking than wrenching and this is what has popped in my mind as my must do next mod. If any of yall have any experiance in removing the doors or any advice I would love to here it. Thanks

I did this mod and it works great. I have a 2 door and can manage slidding the doors on and off myself.

I hope my hatch doesn't. It's fiberglass, I could punch through it if I wanted to.

with blake i dont see how fiberglass could be THAT supportive... i mean i know that my hatch opens/closes like a$$ but that is due to my trashed bumper and as rusty as my heep is and as hard as i play i am sure i would notice by now if it was flexing much.. as for the doors alot cut the bottom half of the hinge off and use pins.. (think tj)

Did you try searching? Heavymetal has a pre-97 write up and Sharpie has the 97+ write up. Hell, they may even be stickies by now.

Hey what do you know it is a sticky.

on trucks they did something intresting....they cut off the area around the hinge and welded in a new plates with nuts, then made a plate with holes in it welded to the hinges so it could bolt on

now applying that idea to the pin is a little different....but i am thinking I will make something similar so that mine will lift up and out just like a wrangler (keep in mind I have a an 2000 you can already do this to the older style)

i used heavymetal's writeup. i left the doors on and cut the lower parts of the hinge off. the pins were a pain and didnt fit right afterwards so i pounded them out and put 1/4 bolts in for pins. they are now real easy to remove and after some pounding they close better than before. no more wind noise yay.

I enjoy my home made tube doors,
one thing i didn't think about is that with the doors off when you go to turn your lights on , a buzzer goes off letting you know your lights are on, haven't really looked intofixing it cause it was last yr, but its getting warmer now Soo they will be back
