Doorless 4dr

How many of you drive around more days than just a few with all your doors off? What are the local laws pertaining to it and the law aside how bad do the police mess with you because of your 4doorless jeep.
And now m y tech.....hom much safety are you losing in the event of an accident?

I've driven past police officers riding bikes, motorcycles, and in cruisers and they have never even given me a second glance. As far as safety I have 3/16" thick tube sliders that offer more protection than my doors probably ever would.

I have just the front two doors off my jeep, I'm waiting for it to get real hot out to do the back two. I think if you drive safe then it shouldn't matter if you have them there or not. I get the strangest looks from everyone that drives past me, EXCEPT cops. They haven't hassled me yet, but I do have a mirror i got from a bicycle shop on the drivers side.

Every state is different. Most states have laws against driving doorless.Just because one person says they get away with it doesn't mean you are. Most states have a law that says if it came with doors from the manufacture then they must remain there. Most will try to bring up the fact that Wranglers get away with it.Yes they do,they can come from the manufacture that way hence they get away with it.Now they technically get a ticket for it if the cop wants to be a total *** about it.

Do you loss any safety? I would have to go with most definitely .You are losing any and all side protection.I know even in a lifted rig I wouldn't want to get T-boned with the doors off.Ya so what you may have slider thats not keep the car from coming up into the cabin.Sure it might take some of the force but its not going to take it all.

I've never heard of anyone having any issues around here driving with the doors off of their CJ/YJ/TJ/JK (or EFB for that matter), so I don't see any issues with driving around in a doorless XJ.

In CT you only need one rear view mirror.

For the folks in Ontario (Canada, not Cali!) it's as was posted previously - if it came from the factory with permanent doors, that's how it must stay.

I would say you are deffinately giving up some safety because the doors should help structure wise. I guess what I'm saying is if you cut 75% out of the sides of a box it would crush alot easier. at least a wrangler has a real frame under it. not knocking xj's I love mine, nor am I knocking going doorless. just stating you have a unibody which is not the strongest thing in the world, and being doorless kinda weakens it more.

Surely you don't drive around doorless with the kid strapped in the carseat in the back...

I'm going to take my doors off eventually, but not until my son's old enough to sit in the seat without a booster.

in every doorless thread, this always comes up. the doors offer very little to no unibody structural support. if you heard the doors support the unibody strength, im assuming you heard that from a wrangler guy. ive had the doors off a couple times since i made them easily removable a couple weeks ago. ive driven past a couple cops and they just kind of stare for a little bit and then look away. i even pulled up next to a cop the first day i was doorless and he looked over and saw me and then eyed my cherokee and then just shook his head..but he was smiling so it was all good. and i didnt even have mirrors on.

tomorrow its supposed to be sunny and warm so im going to rig up some mirror brackets but id check your local laws first. i have no idea if its illegal in minnesota and yes, just because a few cops didnt pull you over doesnt mean the next wont just so i can use that as a disclaimer.

as for safety, freak things happen but ofcourse its not as safe as having your doors on. but i worry more about getting caught in a rain storm doorless than getting in an accident. just always look around and be aware of whats going on.

That is correct when we are talking about unibody flex. In an accident, the doors may very well provide support depending on the situation. For example if the XJ lands on its roof, the doors may help prevent the roof and pillars from caving in as far as they would without them. From the side I don't see them helping the structure at all but they could help protect the passengers.

I drive my XJ doorless too and while I recognize the "risks" that there may be, they are risks I am willing to live with (or die with...) I don't believe in being careless or reckless, but I also am not paranoid. For those that are, why not wear a helmet while driving your XJ too, because you never know what might happen...

very true, forgot about rollovers but whoever heard of an xj rolling over?

only time i wouldnt drive doorless is obviously in bad weather but i wouldnt go on the freeway for a long distance doorless either. for one, if bad weather starts, youre screwed but two, stuff happens alot faster on the freeway (obviously) but id rather not fall out of my jeep at 75mph because i swerved to avoid something...
