Detroit Locker vs. Powertrax

Since you all have been so informative and helpful in my quest for automatic, super durable locker options for my D30 and 8.25.....and since I've just learned that I'll need to replace my carrier in the D30 to go from 3:55 to 4:10 gears (I knew I had to do that in my 27 spline 8.25 to go to 29 spline).

So the question is: are the Detroit Lockers a better option cost/durability/driveability wise considering I'll have to purchase 2 new carriers if I go the Powertrax route, whereas the Detroit Lockers will replace the carriers if I go that way.

Any feedback very welcome

Cost is the issue. I believe you can get a new carrier from 4wd.com or quadratec.com for around $60-70.

Then a lunch box locker for around $250-300. So about $310 best case and $370 worst for the D30 front. I'd say look for a Aussie locker for the front.

For the rear, you will be in the same boat sense you are swapping carriers to get the 29spline shafts to fit.

A detroit will run you about $680 http://www.quadratec.com/products/16100_320.htm

I found the Detroit Soft Locker at PORC for $469.99...if I'm looking at the right thing...I'm just learning about automatic lockers. The 8.25" is $529.99.

http://www.performanceoffroadcenter.com/oscommerce/product_info.php?cPath=37_76&products_id=413

even with the price of $469.99 it still makes more sense to go with a lunchbox style locker with a new carrier.

Thanks for your continued help balloo93 !!!!

Cost wise yes. The stock carrier will not be as strong as the detroit carriers though.

I'd lean tword the Aussie up front and a full case in the rear.

I'm running a detroit softlocker in my rear d44. I absolutely love the thing. Pretty invislble on the street in the rear with an automatic unless you drive like a *******. The traction benefits offroad are amazing.

gregmondro,
Am I correct in believing that the SoftLocker is an automatic locking differential?

thanks,

Yep, it's basically the newest version of the Detroit Locker.

Would it be overkill to have Soft Lockers in my 8.25 and my D30?

My main objective is to build a bulletproof driveline for 31 10.50 TSL SSR's.

I've already got a PORC SYE and new rear ds/u-joints. Next will be alloy axles front & rear.

many thanks,
mark
