Dashboard Creaking and Cracking
Before all of the "well it's a Jeep get used to it" or "It's not a Benz" or "Noises like that are common" comments just hear me out.....
A few days ago my dashboard started making this noise, like plastic cracking or popping into/out of place whenever I hit hard potholes or bumps in the road. I decided to take apart all the parts of the dash I had to remove when I installed my stereo in July, and piece everything back together, thinking that I may have incorrectly replaced something. WELL, as soon as I left the parking lot and hit a bump, it all cracked/popped again. I haven't forced anything back into place, all clips and parts I removed and reinstalled were not broken or damaged either. It sounds as if the noise is coming from the part of the dash nearest to the windshield defroster vents. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

mine makes the same noise from the same place... near the windshield
although I only hear it when I start it up and leave somewhere i assumed it was because after my alarm was installed that it wasnt put back together properly. the seem near the windshield appears to be not right, but nothing to worry about.

My dash makes a really bad squealing sound on the highway. I took it apart and wherever I found metal clips, I wrapped them in electrical tape. Stays nice and quiet now.

mine creaks on the passenger side of the central section (A/C controls, stereo headunit, etc).
when i touch the panel just a little, it stops, but, without tearing the whole center section out, its pretty much unfixable. just turn up the stereo ![]()

ok, well as long as you guys get the same noise too from the same areas i'm not going to be s concerned. I'll be tearing into it again this summer to finish my stereo so I'll do the electrical tape trick then.
Thanks for the help!

Holy huge relief batman. My jeep has made that loud plasticky ALMOST glass like crack ever since i bought it. Usually when its cold and I turn hard one way or the other. I assumed I got jacked and that the windshield had been poorly replaced after an accident. Course I only assumed this because of the crap paint and rust thats ONLY around front of the rain gutter and above the windshield, but THAT is another thread entirely.

mine does this too...especially if i have the heat on...i always assumed it was from all the plastic warming up and expanding and settling...never really worried about it a whole lot...i use to worry about stuff like that all the time...now if i get a CEL or hear funny noises i look at my gauges and make sure i have Oil pressure and voltage, and not over heated...if all thats ok...ill fix it later.

Mine does this too.
I have plenty of other noises to address first.

Yea, come to think of it, it only happened when I had heat on. Not worried about it anymore, WMW raises a good point!

yep, mine does the same exact thing too. not too often, but usually when i hit some bump in the road. like someone said, it almost sounds like a glass cracking pop. it's part of what makes jeeps so unique.
