What are your plans for the jeep that make you want an axle swap?

The D30 can stand ALLOT of punishment....unless your planning on running anything over 35s locked it should fair pretty well.

I would suggest shaft upgrades and maybe a truss....but thats all I would do personally.

Buy some chrome moly shafts, and keep and carry your stock shaft for trail spares.

most any 4wd vendor will stock them.

Also the new "cool" things are the RVC shafts, supposed to be even stronger than the normal chromoly shafts. though one down side to strong shafts and u-joints is that then the ring and pinion are now the weak point, grenading one of those is not pretty.

It can be done on newer OBD2 XJs just the same but it will trigger the CEL. Montana Auto Fab has a setup they claim doesn't trigger the CEL, it uses some resistors to put a dummy load on the solenoid drivers and adjusts the MAP sensor output IIRC. I'm working on a plan of my own to allow full manual control of the AW4 and still retain the auto function w/o CEL, but its just a plan so far.

Keeping the lever in 1-2 you won't be seeing 2nd gear too often. Only shifts closer to redline. I can't remember too many times I've gotten headache with 1-2 or 2-1 shifts when on the trails. IMO not the most important mod, but. Sure is handy at times

If hes got a 98 then its a lp d30 so a hp d30 from an older Cherokee (before 97) and some shafts and its good to 35s and look at RADesigns Products there stuff is sweet and dose wat you and chriskeenan want it to do.

Its 100 bucks for a complete phd30 from my local pap.

Wrong info there my friend.. Only the '00-'01 XJs use an LPD30. All others are high pinion.

For the OPs cheap front axle upgrades, I agree with others that he's pretty much limited to cromo- shafts. Even a truss can become suprisingly expensive with all the fab & weld work if he hasn't got the tools for the job.

You either need to talk with the dealer about getting new SKIS keys made, or you have to remove the SKIS ignition module and replace the ECM with one that does not have the SKIS system setup. AFIK there is no way to undo the SKIS install on the ECM, it has to be replaced.
