Damaged harmonic balancer
I started getting screeching noises at the crankshaft pulley, so I would tighten the belt reducing the noise
Today it failed completely, I heard a clunk and something fell of the fron of the engine, then the steering got hard, I was expecting to have a broken belt... but no! the crankshaft pulley is gone !! I only have the hub left
So ... the pulley was dropped somewhere in the highway
Luckily this happened only 5 min from home , it took about 30 min to finish the drive home, I was being careful not to overheat the engine
oh well tomorrow I 'll look for the part
there is a pic of the hub on the engine ... no pulley

YES. FIX IT NOW. If the balancer separates (like it did for the OP), it can trash your radiator, or your timing chain cover, or other under hood components. Worst of all, you CANNOT drive it very far with this part missing.
The original poster was lucky to get his to a place where he could repair it.

No, it's a current problem. Rockauto sells new ones for a good price.

Or your local auto parts store should have one for a good price.
Here's a couple pics of the one that went bad on my 89, and what it did to the timing chain cover.
New on the left, old on the right
Damage to the cover
Yes, it caused an oil leak, I was able to repair the cover with JB Weld without removing the cover from the engine.

Went to autozone they have them for $56 bucks, o'reilly's $54 bucks. If I remove electric fan and the big fan that should give me the room I need to work? Also gonna do loan a tool at autozone for harmonic balancer puller anything else I need?

That really isn't helpful. Almost everything can be done from underneath the vehicle.

Get the AZ installer tool, also. I would replace the timing cover seal while the balancer is off. That only takes a few minutes.
