Go for a remain head, yes. But go for a head from a slightly older HO engine. I cannot remember the casting number for the previous version (up through about 98), but that's the one you should ask for.

the casting number on mine was only visable once i pulled off the valve cover
so your saying that i dont need to get the same casting number on the head, a different head will still work?

I am about 95% certain the head you want is the 97-98 head, which has the same geometry as the 2000 head, without the casting flaw.
Go over to Jeeps Unlimited, and find a guy over there who goes by the name of Dino Saava. He is the guru on engine parts interchange on the 4.0, and can confirm this.

well i found an aftermarket cylinder head that replaced the #0331 casting from a company called clearwater cylinder heads. they said that the new head is made from a stronger material and is reinforced at the weak points. it set me back $440 but it's a brand new head complete with new valves, springs, and retainers already assembled. all the reman. heads i looked at were between 350-385 so for the extra bit i get some peace of mind. i'll post pics and an update when it arrives and my front door.
