Custom 4x4 Fabrication rear bumper and tire carrier install

***Update 4/6/2007 - Posts 9 and 10***
***Update 4/7/2007 - Posts 12 and 13***

Well after waiting 3 LONG months (xmas gift from the girlfriend), I finally get to install this with tomorrow having the day off from work.

Now today after work I decided to get a "head start" by pulling off the rear plastic end caps and get a quick look at what the quarter panel gaurds would look like when installed. And to my surprise I was greeted with my good old friend RUST. Mother F'er...LOL.

So tomorrow for a few hours I know what I'll be doing but I'd like to get some others opinions here. I know I've got to remove it the rust as much as possible then paint it with some sort of primer, maybe? I was thinking Rustoleum Automotive primer and then just a regular old black paint to cover it.

Is there something else or another product I should use that works better? As you can see below its not a HUGE amount but I would like to slow it down.

Drivers side...

Passenger side...

if that is going to be covered up, grind the paint off and grind the rust down to bare metal, then just put some metal primer and paint on to seal itup. or you can buy some of that POR stuff and see if it'll do the trick.

Break out the sanding disks and see where your at. If those areas are going to be under/ covered by the corner guards then I would just hit them with some rustoleum auto paint primer and maybe a second coat of flat black paint and be done with it. You obviously need to make the rust go away first. Hopefully that is all surface rust.

Sand down the rusty area to bare metal. Get some POR-15 if you are really anal about keeping the rust out, and paint with that.

If you are less concerned about rust returning, just cover the bare metal with appropriate aerosol undercoating. Once the C4x4 quarter panel covers are in place, you shouldn't have to worry thereafter.......

Ok...I wasn't sure if there was some sort of special procedure or steps other then sanding the rust away and applying some automotive primer.

I'm not super anal about it but I would like for my XJ to hold up and not develop holes...LOL...so slowing it down would be the term to use.

I guess I'll get to it in the morning and hope for it just to be surface rust...it seems like it may be because last year about this time when I had to remove the rear bumper to install the nut strips in the frame to hold up the gas tank skid and hidden hitch, I didn't see and signs of rust so I might be OK and not have to worry about holes but I'll see tomorrow.

More pics to come as I'll add them in after each day.

Just make shure you get the entire area of rust down to COMPLETE bare metal.

+1000. If you don't do this, the rust WILL return, even if painted or otherwise coated.

Only somtimes...

Well here is an update. Let me say working in the garage SUCKED because its a single bay with things in it. I did roll out the snow blower, grill, vacum and some other things to make room but still felt kind of tight.

Well I started digging in on the drivers side with a wire wheel and a drill and after about 20 seconds or so I found a BIG PROBLEM...

Passenger side wasn't so bad...

Applied some Rust Bullet paint...

And made a cover for the drivers side out of some aluminum sheet metal scraps I found under the work bench and added some rivets and silicone...

The passenger side holes were small enough that I just used silicone and plugged them up.

Then I test fitted the guards along with drilling and bolting them into place but then removed them to give the underside of that two coats of flat black paint...

And through out all that wait time for the silicone and rust bullet paint to dry I also scuffed the rockers, primered and textured painted them...I don't have an pics of the finished product but tomorrow I will...

I'm beat!!!! Nothing on/in/to do to this Jeep is easy. These are day long projects and my whole body is feeling it...especially my knees.

It's looking good though and when you get the bumper and tire carrier on it'll be worth the effort. I have the same bumper and like it alot.

Thanks... and yes. It looks good but the whole bumper, carrier and tire lowered the XJ 1/2" Oh...well looks like I'll need to get those 1" shackles and coil spacers.

And the other thing...is the wheel suppose to look off centered like by accident? Just wondering...I know other manufacturers do that but at a greater distance from side to side. Mine just looks like it was drilled in the incorrect location compared to the pics on their site...

Mine...

Theirs...

And the rest of the pics...

Great photos! You should post some pics of how you setup the license plate mount.

The tire is supposed to be off-center a bit. C4x4 changed that up a few years back so the liftgate would clear big tires (ie: 35's or bigger) when the tire carrier is swung all the way open.

Does anyone know the difference between the '84-'96 and the '97-'01. All I can tell is that the later includes the lower quarter guards. Is thier any other difference between the 2?

Also, would a '97-'01 fit on the early body style XJ's?

Jason you know?
