I had to move back to school and I was going with a friend pulling a uhaul, he was doing about 60 the whole way from colorado, so I followed doing the same. The results were amazing, I got 21 miles to the gallon on the first tank and 22 on the second. I didn't even get that good of gas mileage when it was stock.

600's dont get anywhere near the mileage of a 250, and newer 600's are bad starter bikes

I prefer a more laid back ride. My Kaw Vulcan 750 rides nice and smooth, is comfortable to go 2-up and has enough room in the saddlebags for quick trips to the store. Average mpg is 45 which is triple my around-town xj. Feels real good to fill up for $8!
Oh yeah, one of my nephews can't stay with me on his 250 crotch rocket, while my other nephew beats me in the quarter mile by about 1 bike length on his 650 (he couldn't believe it!).
On the highway, I like to brag becasue my xj gets 25mpg and I drive at 75 to 80! Not sure why, but I'm not complaining.

you were probably drafting him...thats why you got such great gas mileage...cyclists do it to conserve energy..you can do the same thing with 18wheelers on a regular basis..some of them don't mind but some of them hate it...thats why its a good idea to keep the cb on 19 listening for strong signals complaining about "a 4wheeler tailgrabbing my ***"...

Normally I get about 270 miles before I have to fill up, on my way to school, I managed to get to 250 on a little more than half a tank. It's amazing what you get when you go that 55-65 mph. I tried to draft a semi for a while, an hour or so, but the last hour and a half I got the same mpg without doing so... and the view was much nicer.
The first four hours of my trip were on a major highway, so I was going about 75mph and my gas went as always, about 13-14 mpg. I might just have to start following the speed limit of 65.
