Anybody have a good write-up on advancing timing, or even know of a company that makes aftermarket CPS units that are already set to advance timing?

Great right up, for me. It was a 7/16 socket that fit the bolts for me. I have a 98 cherokee though.
And man, i wish i heeded to the advice to wait till the car is cooled off just a tad...it was kinda like when u bite into hot pizza and u dont know what to do with the burning piece in your mouth, except the burning is on your arm and u cant figure out how to get it out of that tiny space FAST!

Mine is sitting in the parking lot at work dead. I have a 97 4.0 with a manual transmission. Would that be in the same place? I just had mine replaced about a year ago.

Thanks in Advance.

Great writeup! I'm tempted to buy one now for my '01, as it has been experiencing some loooooooong startup times in the AM. I have to crank it like 15-20 seconds sometimes before it fires up.

to advance the timing you can just make the holes larger to move the CKS over a little. just not sure which way...

Pretty sure Hesco makes one. I had read an online article years ago that mentions some advance on a stock "high altitude" version of the CPS. Not sure if this really exists, but might be worth looking into.

take the top bolt OFF first and put it back ON last... this way there is no chance it might drop into the hole where the sensor goes into the bellhousing.

Quick question

I just swapped in a rebuilt Renix in my 89 XJ... and even before the project I had a really tough time starting the darn thing! 219,000 miles... DUH! of course it would be hard to start! I got my new motor in and it's a little easier to start... but still very difficult! sometimes takes me around 8 secconds of cranking to start. I checked the timing and it's about 10-12 degrees retarded and the Jeep sputters 4 times, every time after I start it... hot or cold. I knew to check the knock sensor first of all... HUGE crack in it! So $54 later I got a new knock sensor... but nothing is different. Timing is still off 10-12 degrees and she still tries to die when first started in the mornings! I was just wondering if my problem(s) could be my... crispy CPS? Did I mention my gas mileage is terrible... I assume from the timing? est. mpg 13.5 in town... stock everything

Thank's!, Very timely write-up I'm waiting for the new CPS to arrive 8/21. I can't believe that the dealer and every part's store in town did'nt have one in stock?.
I realize mine is a 92'(old) I'm more pissed that Chrysler could'nt keep them standard to cover a variety of year's?.

That won't work on the OBD-II engines. They revert to base timing even if you relocate the CPS a few degrees.

That WILL work on OBD-I and Renix engines.

Omg, I was so afraid of doing this (well, not afraid, but it looked hard to get to).

From start to finish, first time doing it, it took me 20 min.

I am about to go out and snap a picture of my extension setup which worked like a CHARM.

No string, no extra hands, just extensions, socket and 20 min.

Firstly hi to all, New member here.
I have a 94 Cherokee (4.0) dead in my drive at the moment, I have relayed the symptoms to my local dealer and he say's it's the crank position sensor. Thing is that when I turn the ignition on I no longer hear the fuel pump prime, and there is no fuel pressure in the fuel rail. Does the CPS also control the fuel pump?
Thanks in advance for any replys.

Update- Just run some further tests, I have proper spark but no fuel pressure, fuel pump prob.

i replaced mine last year. i used a spiffy coil extension, that i recently cut the end off of to use as an HD drain snake. if mine fails again, im cutting a hole with a holesaw in the firewall right behind those bolts, then using a rubber floor plug (ala cj) to plug the hole. same plan for my top 2 bellhousing bolts when i do the clutch later this summer.

very nice write up. i changed mine on our 1990 last summer. it was my first time changing one so it did take longer then 20minutes but i took my time. and ya! be carefull not to drop anything in the bellhousing!! using a ujoint adapter (whatever there called) and some long extensions works best. not sure on the size, 11 - 12mm or 7/16 was one of em.
