Crank Position Sensor
I have a problem and ty for the replies in (4.0 Fuel problem) which leads me to the crankshaft position sensor .. It seems almost impossible to take it off without taking half the engine apart on my inline 6... can anyone tell me how to get it off... I dont want to take my engine apart just to take 2 bolts of to get the sensor off. I have read various Threads here and alot of starting problems lead to the cps. and i am thinking that is whats wrong with mine cause it will crank but it just wont turn over.

Stop right there!!!!!!
BEFORE YOU EVEN DO THAT, TRY THIS... Unhook your battery, unplug the PCM (computer), take CPM out, take out 1 of the torx head screws on the outside of PCM (1/2 inch long), cut it in half and replace it, then do the other one. Now replace the CPM, hook it back up and hook up the battery. You will probably be all set now. Good Luck, Ernie

CPS Install instructions -> http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/crank-position-sensor-write-up-197260/
Test the CPS. CPS Testing Crankshaft Position Sensor Connector (CPS/CKP) ![]() . ![]() TESTING PROCEDURE 1991 – 2001 4.0L H.O. engines 1. Near the rear of intake manifold, disconnect sensor pigtail harness connector from main wiring harness. 2. Place an ohmmeter across terminals B and C (See Image). Ohmmeter should be set to 1K-to-1OK scale for this test. 3. The meter reading should be open (infinite resistance). Replace sensor if a low resistance is indicated. TESTING PROCECURE for 1987 – 1990 4.0 L engines Test # 1 - Get a volt/ohm meter and set it to read 0 - 500 ohms. Unplug the CPS and measure across the CPS connector's A & B leads. Your meter should show a CPS resistance of between 125 – 275 Ohms. . If the CPS is out of that range by much, replace it. Test # 2 - You'll need a helper for this one. Set the volt/ohm meter to read 0 - 5 AC volts or the closest AC Volts scale your meter has to this range. Measure across the CPS leads for voltage generated as your helper cranks the engine. (The engine can't fire up without the CPS connected but watch for moving parts just the same!) The meter should show .5 - .8 VAC when cranking. (That's between 1/2 and 1 volt AC.) If it's below .5vac, replace it. . ![]() .

I found that lowering the back end of the tranny down gives you a fair amount of room to work and almost makes it decent to make the change.

Follow testing procedures noted by Tim earlier in this post.

lay with your body going from the drivers side of the jeep towards the passenger side. Get up close to the front tire and look up at about 1 o'clock angle. You can see the cps and the two bolts. I ran my new one down along the old one so when I took out the bolts, slid out the old, put in the new one and rebolted it all within a few minutes. (I found it easiest to lay on my left side and was able to do most of the work with one hand)

Ive never used an Ohmmeter before, i suspect my CPS is bad and would like to test it before I buy a new one.
That being said i just picked up one that came with my code reader. The code reader said it couldnt connect which worries me that it may be the ECM. The range goes from 200-20m. It was stated to test in the range of 10k but i dont see that number, only 2000 and 20k are the ones closest to the range specified. Which range should I use? And which terminals should i plug into? Ive tested the following and have these results 20m = 0 200k= 0 20k= 0 2000= 001 200= 00.4 This is the model I have http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=ftJ&rls=org.mozilla:en-US fficial&q=iequus+multimeter+3300&bav=on.2,or.r _gc.r_pw.&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=6106001888566369250&sa=X&ei=Ky2BTdTRMoS6sQOJ quXzAQ&ved=0CCwQ8wIwAg#

This is how I did it. It can be a pain, but not really all that bad with long extensions.
