Crank Position Sensor ???

hello, im new tot he XJ's and have been asking about fuel rlelated questions in a different thread, but now Im wondering if i am going in the wrong direction.

If the crank position sensor is bad, will it prevent the fuel pump from getting power? Will it prevent the injectors from getting power?

What controls power to the crank position sensor?

My understanding is that this sensor is located on on the back of the motor, near the bellhousing. This would corollate with the same position the under carraige spray was hitting at the time the Jeep simply died, and would not get fuel pump power, or injector power.

This is my first MPI powered engine, so treat me like a kid in your explinations.

Until two weeks ago I was still using carb powered motors.

The CPS is located on the drivers side top of the bellhousing. It's simply an inductive magnet that reads the impulses generated by an on-flywheel magnet. The computer uses it to determine engine speed and spark advance. YES, if this sucker is not working your computer will not know when to fire.

Disconnect it and re-plug it back in. Alot of times this will get you a few more starts till you can replace it.

The lead from the CPS should run up to your intake manifold and have a 2-prong connector you can disco. If I remember right, the wires are green and black....just follow it up from the bellhousing.

The CKP controls (in part) the engines timing. It is in no way fuel related. Fuel related sensors include the MAP and the TPS. Check your ASD relay, and your fuel pump relay. Also make sure that your fuel pump hasn't gone TU.
