CPS Crank Position Sensor

It appears this CPS is a constant problem with Jeeps. I think mine is bad and I read somewhere you are better off soldering the connection becuase 99% of the time its the connector that is bad rather than the actual sensor. Has anyone done this or have any thoughts about doing this? If you have please provide details on how it was done and which side is soldered. I plan on putting a new one in and soldering the old one and keeping it for a spare since everyone seems to say a spare kept on board is a good idea especially when in the middle of nowhere offroading. Thanks.

In some cases it may be a bad connection, but usually disconnecting and reconnecting is used as a "reset" to see if the CPS is bad. In most cases the CPS will fail again due to it being bad.

As far as soldering goes you would have to solder both sides together cutting off the original connectors. As I understand it on the older Renix systems there's more then one connection.

In most cases the actual sensor goes bad , not the wiring?
I have the new one and from looking at it, its a pretty simple sensor.

CPS sensor problems

My experience with CPS's (and that's a few) is that the factory replacement works best. Intermittent failure is the worst as it will cut out at the worst possible times, then restart without any indication of problems.
In any electrical connection especially engine management always solder parts and use shrink tubing IF possible.Crimped butt connectors will work but should be replaced with a soldered connection and waterproofed on Jeeps .
A spare CPS is not a bad idea. Good Luck with it! This is the most common reason for 4.0 or 2.5 engine no starts .
