From the stock guide sticky at the top, you could have 4.10's or 4.56's. I think that you will have the 4.10's though.

Would it be best to swap gears or just swap both axles.

Yes, the numerically higher gears are better for bigger tires. I need to go from 3:55's to 4:56's when I get the money.

To swap gears would be a lot of time and money, if you can't do them yourself. What rear axle do you have?

The front will be a D30 and is the same axle (vacuum disconnect) and the rear could be a D35 or Chryco 8.25. If they do have 4:56's, then you should definitely do the swap. They are the same axles, just taller gears.

If you do swap them over, while you're at it and have the money, you should change the bearings, front and rear, ball joints, u-joints, ect. in the new axles. That way, you won't have any problems during the life of the jeep.

Thanks for all the help.I will probably swap them out anyway the 4.10's have got to be better then my 3.55's lol The parts jeep has flat tires so there is no way of getting under it as it sits. One of these days i will jack it up and see what the tags say.

Most likely have 4.10s although it could be 4.56 if there is a tow pkg on it IIRC...

Regardless, they will be better than the 3.55 with 35s

In 84 the only option was the D35 without C-clips. Most will agree that it's a better axle than the D35 with C-clips, but NOT the axle to put 35s on.

Front axle would be okay, but I'd swap in a 1-piece axle shaft from a 95+ and the short shaft from a 95+ as well. There's a llink in eth Tech/FAQ covering that swap.

The axle under my jeep right now is a 35 with c-clips and it has handled 35's for along time now.

What year? The 97+ have the 29 spline axles and could handle the 35s unlocked. With a locker, it's still doable, but you have to wheel it smart.
