First off, great forum, really glad to be a part of it.
Just bought a 91 XJ, d35/d30, NP231, ax15, bone stock, but have been wheeling it like crazy. I am thinking of doing an RE6130 4.5 inch lift, 2 inch spacers in front, and shackles and wedges in the rear, and would like to run 35x12.50 with ample trimming and flares. So who has a lift similar, and are you happy with it, and also what gears would get me as close to stock driveability? (I'm thinking 4.56)
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

4.88 is better for 35's but if it were me I'd choose a different rear axle to build. Also I would rather spend the additional money and get a real 6" (or 6.5") lift kit from the start rather than do the spacer thing. Why? 6.5" is way too tall IMO for short arms. Either get a kit with drop brackets or long arms. You'll also need a SYE and CV driveshaft at that height.
That's just my opinion.

Keep in mind that lift "sizes" are all relative...like tire sizes. They get you in the ball-park, but are often variable from manuf. to manuf.
RE lifts tend to run a bit tall for their respective "size" before settling. While others will sit spot on at installation and then settle to less than advertised.
I've had good success with RE 3.5" packs, a 1" shackle, and a 1" billet block, which put me between 5" and 6" after break-in.

Sounds like you've got a good lift planned, or atleast the BRAND
A few things to think about.
Depending on the type of wheeling you do and the street driveability you want, you might want to reconsider a few things.
#1- 35's w/6+" lift and short arms is going to cause you Daily Driver driveability problems......nothing huge but you will have many little Quirks to work out and you may never iron them all out with that setup. So think about a Long Arm kit if you can afford it and get it out of the way.
#2- If the $2K-$3K isn't in your budget, go with 33's, the RE4.5" and drive that till you can afford to build a rear axle and then go bigger. 35's is a sure way to tear up that D35.......even on the street.
So it really depends on what you intend to wheel/drive.

I have the RE 4.5" lift (3.5" packs and 1.75" shackle). It's about 6" in the rear and 5.5" up front. That lift would be OK if you trim the fenders out for the larger tire and throw some bumpstops under it. If you stay at a lower lift height, you can save some $$ when you do the SYE by using a front DS in the rear. Anything over 6" of actual lift and you should really have a stock XJ front DS lengthened or have a custom one built.
I'd start looking for an XJ D44 or look into an explorer rear axle if you want 35's. The explorer 8.8 are plentiful and superior axle makes a nice kit to convert it to semi-float axle and beefs it up nicely.

I would agree with Erik but go long arms you will be much happier with the streetability and off road performance.

I'm thinking that I'll go auto wrecker hunting for a ford 9inch and a D44 to replace the stockers, that I'll work on over the winter (trimming the diff's, trussing, etc).
But what I'm after is droop, so the biggest tires possible with the least amount of actual lift. I have a buddy with a 4runner on 39's that he can still park in a standard garage.
P.S I'm thinking long arm even if I go with just a straight 4.5 lift.

With 4.5" lift I'd say you could run 35's with a very aggressive trim job and properly set bumpstops.
