To compress or not ?

On my 90 XJ .. i cant remember if i used a spring compressor to install the RE 3.5" springs.. On my current 92XJ , im starting my install on a RE 4.5".

Well just my luck, lol i open the spring compressor case and OH ofcourse only 1 out of 2 are in there. REALLY!!? .. I really dont feel like renting one. I cant remember if i can just drop the axle low enough to where i wont need to compress the spring to get it in. Everything is getting replaced anyways since its a full SF kit.

Such a noob question..

It can be done without compressors. Remove the LCAs and UCAs and the trac bar so the axle can "flex" far enough out of the way to slide the coil out.

Remove tires, disco sway bar, lower axles/raise vehicle enough to FULLY extend springs (you'll know when you've got them loose- the tops will flop free), remove spring clamp, then springs. If you are going with new CA's R and R them at this time. Install bumps/jounces at this time, seat springs.....I wouldn't recommend removing and replacing the CA's until after you get the springs out.
You can do it w/o a lift provided you have jack stands that will get the vehicle high enough to allow the 4.5" coils to fit into place.
Whatever poster stated to remove the CA's in order to get the springs out has no clue...

I just rented a set from Autozone. It was like $9 and made short work of removing the coils.

I don't think it possible to rent just one, but I'm not gonna get into it with you over what the man meant. Sounded to me like he lost one of his own or borrowed and didn't want to rent some. I may be wrong. Regardless...

My point is $9 bucks saves a lot of wrenching if just putting coils in. My XJ is a rust bucket and I rarely find bolts willing to oblige me under my rig. I'd spend $9 just in PB!!! hahahah.
