Compatibility Questions. 87 and 96 Cherokee.

I can get an 87 Cherokee with a 4.0/automatic tranny. I need the motor. A friend of mine has a 96 Grand Cherokee with a 318 and an auto tranny. Would this be the same tranny ?
Do these Cherokees share the same frame ? There is a lift on the 87. I was wondering if it would fit the 96. There is also a factory tow hitch.
Are the wheel sizes the same and do they have the same wheel lug pattern.
What about the front and rear ends ? Are they interchangeable ?
Thanks.

None of the '87 parts that you asked about will work on your friends GC. The lift on the '87 will only work on your XJ, his ZJ has coil springs in the rear. The hitch will work on yours but not his. The wheels should all have a 5x4.5 bolt pattern. The axles would swap directly to yours. To put them on his GC would require adding coil spring pads on the rear axle.

They are 2 very different vehicles. They do not share the same "frame".

Thanks crcashman.
I assume that you mean that the lift from the 87 Cherokee will fit my CJ7 ? You said XJ.
I thought the front axle had the pumpkin on the drivers side on a 87 Cherokee.
Hmmm, what to do ? $300.00 is cheap enough even if I only get a motor. How well do they part out ?

My bad, I didn't even notice that you had a CJ. The lift won't work for either of you. I don't know enough about CJ's to tell you what else will or will not swap. Send CJ7-Tim a PM. He'll know what will and won't work for you.
