I know someone who bought a cold air intake for his f150 and said that he got it for better mpg. Is this true? Any objections?

With the VERY minor difference in MPG that you possibly get isn't really worth the money or effort. You can save more gas by adjusting your driving habits
CAI does make nice (?) sounds though

It is true you can get better MPG with a cold air intake. If you Jeep is a DD and you dont offroad much then i'd say go for it. But they do have there downfalls if you plan on wheeling. They are exposed to water so thy can gt wet and possibly draw moisture into your engine. but there are a few people who routed them into the cowl and use them as a snorkel/cold air intake. If it was me thats what I would do. Search Cowl snorkel or something like that there is a write up some where out there on how exactly to do it.

Read the thread. So if it doesn't improve any on performance, or very little to mpg; then what exactly is the point? Is it strictly for being able to ride through larger depths of water?

Yeap, that's pretty much the point on XJs. Performance and MPG improvements are pretty minor, on almost any vehicle. So not really worth it, because fabbing a CAI system isn't free. There is a difference, and on some vehicles it's worth doing it.
On XJs? If you wheel it, then sure go on and do it (a cowl air intake that is). Is it a DD? IMO, not worth it. Sure if you can get the parts cheap, it isn't doing any harm either. But I wouldn't bother.

i did the same cowl intake as ericsxj, i used a cone type filter, i didnt notice any power or mpg differences, but it sounds soo sweeet once you get on the throttle, it cost me about 50 bucks, and i would do it all over again

you see the biggest improvement with a cold air intake if it is followed by better flowing headers that (for jeep 4.0L) collect at 2.5", followed by a 2.5" downtube to a 2.5" high flow cat, and 2.5" cat back exhaust system. You might see a 2mpg increase with relaxed driving. But with all that you'll see a decent increase in power soooo, thats the main point of them i'd say. The best one i've seen for the XJ is the aFe. The heat shield seals to the top on the hood, and looks like the bottom seals around the bottom of the wheel well...sooooo its decently pretected from water...it seems. Its on my christmas list .

The thing is you will be counter productive.
a Short air intake sounds cool so you have your foot on the skinny peddle more often then before. Intakes do help when you open your exhaust. Doing one with out the other does not serve much of a purpose. you will see better throttle response in most cases.

It has been proven that it does make power, a 4x4 mag did dyno runs using the 4.0L out of a wrangler and did a comparison between Intakes.
I believe K&N and the Brute Force one made the highest gains. But those where with a free flowing exhaust (IIRC)
