cluster voltage gauge showing wrong voltage.

I've had the entire charging system checked, everything is above 13.5 volts...but the guage in the dash varies...daily actually.
I read in an odd post somewhere, about cutting a trace on the back of the cluster and wiring the guage directly to the alternator?

anybody remember this?

i was driving the other day from SC to NH... during that snow storm.. around NJ i got alot of slat spraying all over me and i think it messed up my Alternator... and my gas guage... my alternator when under load would show the volts running down to almost 9 and everything would dim.. i hit it with a can of electronics cleaner and has since stoped and appears to run fine.. but my gas guage is still messed... will not read right... says 1/2 tank all the time unless you fill it up the it says full and SLOWLY trickles back to 1/2
i think the salt water on the road shorted something out...

If the voltage is good, at 13-14volts at the battery, but not the gauge, and your lights are real dim, etc. check your ground strap. Look along your firewall until you see a braided cord. It should be in the middle attached to the firewall and back of the block.
