Chopped The Rear Off

I decided to chop the rear section off roof/window out. Later to come is an enclosed cab, roll cage, rhino type liner...

any comments or suggestions as to ideas on other items to add in or fabricate are welcome, and remember this is the first step.

I don't know if you've heard of them, but American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) have some awesome things. They were the first to stuff a HEMI into a Wrangler. Basically, you ship your Jeep out, and they build it to your specifications. They used to back-half XJs all the time and call it the "Africana" I believe. Pretty sweet stuff, they do WKs, XKs, JKs, etc.

That looks good will be very nice once finished. I would like to see some close up pics of how you do the side edge. I guess you cut it higher and roll it down but I would like to see how clean it looks. Plus a description of how you did it and tools used would be nice. Thanks in advance.

It's surprisingly simple, once you have the rear windows out, it practically gives you your cut lines. What i did was used masking tape to mark the roof line from the top corner of each window area, and then run tape along the back supports to get a straight line. When you take the windows out, there is a lip, i cut that lip off and held
the 2 panels toghether and then started welding. One important thing, when you get the back section cut off, you will find a roof support section, drill the spot welds and it slips right into place on the end of the "new roof". Also, take time with this, but it is not hard to shorten the stock roof rack

And yes, a sawzall will sufice fine.

It does look cool, but without caging it, doesn't it completely screw up the structural integrity of the truck?

Cool thanks AllXJ96, I have a 2DR with roof damage and want to make a full convert out of it but I need to add some frame stiffeners to it before I cut it. But I wanted to start getting some ducks in a row so I have an idea as to how to do it right and make it look good.

The Cage is being planned at the moment, i went today to go get prices, its aprox $70 for a 10ft lenght of 2in O.D. 1/8in wall tubing. Without that back section, it flexes more lol , i havent taken her off road in a while, she's sittin around waiting for a trailer, which is more money than i have...

Hey Chris, make sure you leave enough room to make a cab, im not sure how much is taken away on a 2 door, but the only way im going to have rear seats is to mount buckets sideways. So just look at what you have and plan ahead.
