Chev 350 in an XJ? Is there a write up?

Just got off the phone with my buddy, he has a chev 350 from a 96 camaro ss with the 6 speed manual and I want to put it in my Jeep.

It will fit in the bay, and length wise looks like the tranny might meet the tc perfect.

I would probably trade for someones auto though just to keep it simple.

So how do I do this? just take the engine harness and computer from the chev and put it in the jeep? is there a mount kit? or will that be custom fab for me?

Check with Novak or Advance Adapters. Sounds like a sick setup. Hope it works out for you.

Got to love EPA rules! Laws state a street legal vehicle must have a engine/tranny combo that are of the same year or newer! Therefore unless the DMV in you area doesn't care, or it doesn't have to be inspected, you might be in trouble!

Check into the laws beforehand though! Things may have changed since I last researched putting a 350 in my old 1997 S-10 blazer 2 years ago!

Sorry, thought it said 98 Camaro SS.. I mis-read. Its still a stout engine non-the-less.

Thats pretty cool though, 1996 was the only year they made a 4th gen LT-1 SS.

yea dude those engines are killer,my buddy had one in his 97 firebird w the t56 i belive...and it hauled ***, even tho i whooped him in my stock 84 corvette 350 crossfire injection/borg and warner 4+3spd...also that is a great motor because parts have been out for years and years and years, so there really common and easy to find parts for and work on..

here are some pictures of different generation 350s in XJs. it has been done, i just don't know exactly how.

that first one was just on ebay. a dark blue 2000 or 2001 with a carb. crazy stuff.

what do you plan on doing in terms of engine managment? something tells me you'll have to go with a stand alone engine managment to make that work.

If it was me doing the swap, id save a ton of money and headaches and use a carb.. Swapping over FI seems like it'd be a PITA, but if you have vehicle inspections im going to say its a must that its fuel injected then..

Those pics make the engine look like it belongs in there.

my only advice is to pickup a painless wiring harness to swap a lt1 in a hotrod and save your self some trouble

dude, I'm in Alberta Canada, as long as it doesnt leave an oil spot bigger then your hand while stopped at a light its all good. lol
seriously though around here it doesnt matter as long as it passes a basic safety test.

well 96 was the only 4th gen ss that was numbered, the 97's werent numbered.
Those are the only two years that they were shipped out of the factory to have the ss modifications done. 98-02 SS's were made in the factory. and those are 4th gen as well, but considered 4 gen and a half.

I've owned 3 96 Camaro SS's

Carb might be my best opton, just dont want to take away any of the winter reliability, esspecially since this is my winter vehicle, another SS will be in my stable soon

Yeah, I'd bend over backwards to keep the EFI. If he's giving you the engine, why wouldn't you be able to get the computer too? If he needed it for some reason, I'm sure you could find the ECU and harness in a junkyard.
