Cherokee Airbag equipped steering wheel

Going to keep this one short and simple, but I've a Question:

Did the 91 XJ have an optional Airbag for the drivers seat, and if so is it of the same/ similar type to that found in the 95 or 96 and up trucks?

context: Found a 91 that I'm looking to purchase, but it has the late model looking steering wheel/ air bag and I'm worried its been in a wreck and the airbag was put in as a replacement.

Any knowledge on the subject would be helpful.

Airbags

Drivers side airbag (mechanical) was added in 95.
Passenger side airbag was added in 97. Airbags changed from mechanical to electronic in this year also.

So the only way for the Airbag to have made it onto a 91 would be a retrofit?

Steering wheels would mount the same.....so I guess it would be possible to put a newer wheel on an older column.

Or another possibility would be that the entire column has been swapped in. 95+ columns have a plastic trim around them shielding all the wiring.

I wouldn't bet on the airbag working in the event of an impact tho.
