check engine light & speedo cable

Would not having the speedo cable hooked up cause the check engine light to come on? I'm guessing no, cuz it's still on @ stand still. It just came on as I was driving home from the shop...

I think yes.

My check engine light came on when I didn't line up the correct numbers on the new speedo gear I installed. I drove it about 20 miles with the speedometer not working and the check engine light came on.

I hope to God you're right. If you are, I'm buying you 13 new jeeps.

Well of course I'm right! :)

Cool! I'll start off with a Rubicon Wrangler, a new WJ for long trips and to tow my XJ?, a ZJ/YJ/TJ to build up, a completely stock 2001 XJ in mint condition, a new 2002 turbo deisel XJ from overseas, a few vintage CJ's for good measure, an MJ to haul stuff, and what the heck you could throw in a Libby just so I can say I've driven one

BTW, the next day I aligned the speedo gear properly and got it working but the check engine light was still on so I paid $30 for the stealership to scan the code and tell me that there was no signal from the speedometer. They cleared the code and I ran away. (They wanted to keep the jeep for another couple of hours @ $30,000/hr to see if the sensor was damaged!) They see me comin' and they know it ain't gonna be warranty work!
