"check engine light" diagnostics

I have a 2000 cherokee sport. The engine light just came on today. From the web, I found that the way to get the diagnostic codes was to turn on the ignition while holding the odometer reset button. I tried this, and as expected the gages and indicator lights started through their cycle and the O.D. cycled through all 1's, 2's..... 9's. However, after going through this cycle, there were no codes displayed (according to what I have read, I should have expected a code on the O.D. in the form of "Pxxx"). I tried this several times with the same result. No diagnostic codes. However, my "check engine" light is still on. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

You can go to Autozone and they will do a free reading for you. Or if the OD botton trick doesn't work, then do the key on off on off on. Don't start, just on off position. then a series of numbers and blinks will tell you your codes.

this link has all the codes

You cannot pull codes on a 2000 (or 2001...) by doing the ignition on-off trick that some of the older models can do. The test you did with the trip reset button is simply an instrument panel test. Bottom line is there is no way to pull the codes without a scanner. AutoZone will read the code for you for free, or the dealer will for a charge usually. Other than that you can purchase a scanner yourself >$100.

Eric is right. None of the ignition switch fiddling will give you the diagnostic codes on the last few model years of the XJ. Personally, I got one of these:

I think it was well worth the cost to be able to retrieve and reset codes myself, as well as monitor all the sensor inputs while driving if I want to. But Autozone and (I've heard) some NAPA places will retrieve the codes for you for free.

I think 1997 was the last year to be able to check the codes yourself.

Update- Thanks for the help. Per the advice above, I had it checked out at Autozone. The confirmed that the code is "P0455" which is a aparently a fairly common diagnostic for the EVAP/Vac/Gas Tank system. The most common cause for this is the gas cap, but after a quick visual inspection and several cranks (clicks) on the gas cap, everything appears to be O.K. Anyone else experience this before, or have any ideas as to the next place I can look? Again, thanks for the help.

Did you disconnect the battery to reset the computer?

It is your gas cap, I just went through this a few days ago. I had the mopar locking gas cap and it rusted through internally (dont know why) and failed to seal from then on causing a mil and same code you had. Replaced gas cap and problem solved.
