Check engine light came on. Is there a way to check the code?

while driving today my check engine light came on... is there a way to check the code or do i have to take it in and get some one to read it?

You'll need to have the code read by an external OBD-II code reader.

go to advance auto or auto zone or a place like that. they will read the codes for ya for free. just bring a piece of paper and pen to write down the codes

i thought you could turn the key on and off a couple of times and it blinks a certin number of times or something like that?

I think that works with OBD1 only.

That's only the OBD1 system. The check engine light blinks. You turn the key on, off, on, off, on and watch the light. it will blink, and the blinks are separated by pauses.
Example- blink, blink short pause blink, blink, blink, blink long pause blink, short pause, blink, long pause blink, blink, blink, blink, blink, short pause blink, blink, blink, blink, blink.
codes would be
24 - TPS
11 - no crank signal to computer
55 - end of codes

Mine's OBD1... I tried the 'on-off-on-off-on' technique but my light doesn't blink. is there something i'm not doing right?

it stays on- the 'shift' light (orange arrow) stays on as well. not sure if that makes a difference.
