Changing fluid in 231 TS

To change the fluid in a 231 transfer case do I turn the plug located on the lower back side of the TS? And do I pit in the new fluid at the upper plug located in about the middle of the TS in the rear? These look like the drain and fill plugs but they have a star like center so I am not sure that it is the right place or not. Thanks

Yes, those are the drain and fill plugs.

Be sure you can get the fill plug open before opening the drain plug.

Not sure if the '99 xj has a torx or allen plugs.

Mine had allen plugs. Put a boxed ended wrench on the allen wrench to help you turn it.
