The 4x4 indicator is different between the 231 and the 242, so it won't plug in (no biggie). Also, the spline count change was 1991 with a switch from 21 spline to 23 spline.

So, my local junk yard is run by the dumbest morons in history. I call and ask from a 231 for my 1990 jeep. They said they could sell it to me for only $110. The catch is that I had to deal with these mental midgets. While I am waiting for them to apparently carry this thing from one end of the yard to the other I hear four people that either, these people lost their part, or have already given them the wrong part.

I sat for 45 mins while they deal with this crap. I was getting kinda pissed when they finally carry it out, set on my tail gate and I look down the tag. I was sure as hell not leaving without the right part. Low and behold, its a 242J. I look at the guy and I asked if he would get it trouble for giving me the wrong part, and he said if it would work for me, go ahead and take it. So, in the end their mistake worked out for me. I still have doubts i will ever go back there, but 110 for a 242 is pretty good.

Easy to tell if it's good on the bench. Just wiggle the shafts and run the selector through the positions. If it will grind in the car it will probably grind on the bench.

True but the condition of the progressive coupling will still be unknown. Plus the jeep can apply alot more torque that your arms LOL.

You mean viscous coupling? 242s do not have viscous coupling (Thank god!) for the full time 4wd operation, it's a gear- operated system.

too funny.
no kids, no debt. back in the day,

she got 50% of 401k, pension, home equity, and 5 years spousal support at 1k/month, attorney paid off, plus a lump sum to not bother me again for the rest of my life. it cost over 250k when it all added up.

who says being a man in Cali ain't hard?

fellow jeepers, beware the wedding ring...
