What do you mean "no other choice"? We can possibly help you with routing the cable a better way.

well i want it up front but have no wat to run it through the rubber gromet on the firewall i got too much stuff there as it is. and I tried for about an hour and couldnt get the damn ends through thats why i thought about cutting it and pussing it through the other side i can get aa single wire through it but not with the connectors on the ends. what harm would cutting it and splicing it do. I wont use the cb a ton.

drill a bigger hole?

I wouldn't cut the end off of it, it may cause interference in the cb.

If you have to cut it I'd say put a mini-connecter on the end of the coax from the antenna, then put a mini on the end of the coax to the radio. If youre not experiences with coax you may want to have a pro do the connectors so you know its done right.

you don't have to run it through the firewall. open up one of the front doors, put the wire where the hinge is. run it through the interior of the fender into the engine compartment.
the gasket material used to seal the doors of XJs is so thick you won't have a problem with whistling.

Cable cutting

There is no problem cutting the antenna cable. The important part is how you go about spling it back together when you finished routing it. The only acceptable way I can think of is to buy a couple BNC connectors and a BNC coupler. Try and find a local amateur radio shop in your area, or even a HAM club - they will be most familiar with this. Simple if you have some electronics skills.

Keying the Mic without an antenna load could harm the radio.

Mike.
