Catalytic converter

Shop said that my catalytic converter is bad, any ideas on where or what I should do? Should I go to the junk yard or what?

what makes you think they are right? Could they just be making stuff up or is there a legit reason?

Also new "high flow" cats are ~80$ if you look around, skip the junkyard ones.

They estimated 2000 for a new one, is it easy to fix or will the shop have to do it?

2000 what? I certainly hope not dollars, cause that price is ridiculous. One if not two whole new exhaust systems, from header to tail pipe, could be put in for that price.

Its easy to do, drop the exhaust (45 minutes with hand tools), cut off old cat (5min with saws-all), weld in new cat (5min with welder), and reattach.

But still are you sure its even necessary to replace the cat?

The IAC (idle air control) valve is a 40$ part that takes one tool and 2 minutes to change, start with that.

I seriously doubt the cat is bad. If its plugged up the engine will refuse to rev beyond a certain point, the engine will seem to have no power, the exhaust manifold and pipes with get so hot it will glow red, engine will have very little vacuum, high exhaust pressures. if the catalyst inside simply worn out all it will do is trip the CEL light on the dash. And unless the cat sounds like its full of rocks or marbles when shaken or hit, the cat is fine.

I mean they are a jeep shop, that's all they do. So it's kinda hard not to trust them but thank you for the tips, I'm definatly not paying 2000 for that.

The "Jeep" shop is not the reason to not trust them.

The "$2000" is. That is just plain ridiculous, if not criminal.

Ask them to book out the labor for you...out of the "book"

A cat might take me an hour to swap out, laying on my back, on a gravel driveway, in the snow.

An IAC would likely take me 5 minutes...underwater.

What's the $2000 for ??

Find a new shop. Go to a muffler shop get a quote, then go to NAPA and buy an IAC.

Yeah, I just had my cat replaced and it only cost around 150$. About 80$ for a walker cat and 60$ for the install at a muffler shop.

This is work more suited for a muffler shop, I would go to one of those over a Jeep specific shop (as the later probably has higher rates.)
