Can you test a power window/lock switch?

I think I need a new passenger window/lock switch, but I'm not sure. Is there a way to test it to make sure that it is in fact the problem? None of the junk yards around me have anything newer than a '90ish, and I'd rather not buy something fromt he dealer blindly. Thanks for any help in advance.

get a multimeter and test continuity in the switch (with the help of a haynes manual or something) or test to see if the motor is getting voltage. While something like a broken wire could prevent the motor from getting voltage its probably more likely that the switch is bad

yeah, it does work from the drivers side. The lock actuator on the passenger side doesn't work also, but thats a different problem I think.

I got a multimeter from harbor freight for $2 I think last week.
It has a setting for DC, set it to that & it should be pretty self explanatory to see if you have current or not when the switch is pressed/not pressed.

$0 courtesy of my sustainable energy class anyways, on with the stupid question. Where to the two prongs go? I've already tested the power going into the switch and its good. How to I test to see if power's comming out?

I've also got a circuit tester, would this work as well?

You aren't talking about the window lock switch problem right? You think you actually need the whole passenger module with the lock and window switch on it? What is it doing to make you think that? If it's messing up your whole lock system, just unplug the harness from it and then see if the power locks are working right from the driver's door (I think you can do that).

I'm assuming that the window/lock switch consists of the 2x6" block of plastic on the door. The problem is this; trying to roll down the window from the passengers side, it doesn't work. Seeing as I can't see how to seperate the lock switch from the window switch, I'm assuming its one piece. If I unplug that switch from the rest of the system, the central locking system doesn't work at all.

so here's where I'm at. I have power getting to the lock switch, but not the window switch. I'm assuming they run off the same ground? anyone?

^ for a new day
Hopefully someone can tell me if the window switch and lock switch use seperate grounds, or where I would be losing power to the window switch?

actually they are separate. wait, i didn't look are you 97+ pm sent to you with link to manual's on another site.

windows operate on two wires. for the passenger front I believe it is voilet /white and brown / white

use a test light to see if you are getting power from door ground to the yellow wire and then check to each of the others. (if you get positive two both wires when the switch is in the same direction, then you probably have a broken wire.

for the 99 (which I think is the same 97-01) the windows are in 8S and the diagrams are in 8W...

I have taken apart the switches, and i'll try to take pics when I take apart my 98 to see if I can avoid the jumper fix.

just realized this is a really old thread...
