Can I get more HP/Tq from my 2.8 ?

I know it's a frowned upon engine, and not nearly as awesome as the bullet proof 4.0 and 4.2, but are there any upgrades to get a few more ponies out of this engine.
I bought this thing for a few hundred dollars and won't be crawling it or anything. It was a steal to me, as there is really nothing wrong. More or less bought it to haul my dogs (120lbs dobbies kills my leather car seats) in, grab parts for the CJ in, and go camping with til the CJ is back on the road. But it is just GUTLESS in the engine bay.

Anything like Team Rush Upgrade?

Yes I have searched already and not to much out there..... maybe another Carb.
3.4 swap seems legit down the road ..... maybe.

Has anyone ever even tried to upgrade this thing ?

There's the basics. Carb, ignition system, ram air. Its a cam eater so the more you ask of it the less durable it is. Sorry man.
Like you said the swap is best. The other v6's are dam good. Like the 3+ liters. Relatively easy swaps and you'll get efi.

There's a 3.4 xj in my hood here. He rides with us. He turns 33's no problem. He gets better mpg than any of us in our club.

Thanks for the replies guys. I may do a few minor upgrades as ignition and a good tune on the carb. I filled up on Friday and did some camping and running around. I drove all over this weekend and haven't even dipped into 3/4 tank yet. At this rate I'm a little over 20MPG .....but will see after I run it completely down. Slow and slugish yes..... but the MPGs are astonishing for the age/millage on this engine.

3.4 will be dropped in down the road I believe..... but the CJ comes before XJ in engine swaps. So for now, I'll deal with the sluggishness and bypass those gas stations with the 2.8

Again, Thanks for your input.

Pittys are awesome too. Most dogs with Bad reps like Dbers, Pits, and Rotties are usually the best (most loyal) dogs out there. They have a bad rep because of bad parenting and certain extreme cases.

Just sold the Brown Bomber ..... for such a ragged on engine, I had absolutely no problems with it. Underpowered maybe if you want to go fast, but did just fine off roading and such. MAybe I got lucky. the Odo read 182k when I bought it and had 182K when I sold it. LOL
PO said it's been that way for years. So I/m guessing it was somewhere around 270K on the thing. Still ran strong when I sold it.
