Step one--power to fan switch good?
#2--power to clutch good?
#3--power to high pressure switch good?

I don't own an XJ any longer, but I still think they are the best of all the Jeep products ever made. My XJ was my favorite vehicle in my 50+ years of driving.
So...I stick around and give advice.

everything good now i took a wire and jumped the pressure switch on the a/c line to get pump to kick on and added 12 ounce can. i guess the pump has to be running for it to take freon, took jumper wire back out and pluged in and it works. now i just have to find the leak.thanks for the feedback
