ok, so i understand that a Durango steering box will bolt up on an XJ, but the question still remains, will any Durango steering box work or only certain years fit?? I didnt see if it was answered or not, but is that a direct fit, or does some mods need to be done?

From the factory, all Ford rear differentials have a small metal plate attached by one of the cover bolts. This will have the gear ratio. If it has a limited slip, it will have a "L" stamped beside the gear ratio. Explorers and all other Fords, could be ordered with a number of gear ratios. I personally never seen one with 4:10. Most had 3:55 or 3:73. If the metal plate has been removed, you will need to remove the cover to find out the ratio/LSD.

Here is the latest re-cap of what we have found:

Confirmed Mods:
ZJ V8 Upcountry front coils = net about 1-1.5 inch lift
S10 rear leaf packs (cut eyes off main & bolt springs to XJ main) = 3-4" lift
JK shocks = slight mod to fit 2-4" lift
WJ brake booster & master cylinder = stop faster
YJ brake lines = bolt in & 3-4" longer
ZJ shift knob = replaces XJ knob
'97+ Ford 8.8" rear (need new spring perches, shock & track bar mounts) = 4.10 gears, LSD, disc brakes
Newer Intakes (with modification)
V8 ZJ Tierods = stronger than I6
WJ Knuckles/tierods/draglink (steering upgrade....gives you crossover steering)
WJ Rotors/Calipers = biggers brakes and more stopping power
Mustang 5.0 Injectors = bolt in and have 4 holes instead of 1 for more fuel and better spray pattern
Durango steering box = beefier than XJ box
ZJ V8 alternator (some grinding required) = more power for those of us with lots of accessories
WJ LCA's (slight grinding required) = more tire clearance
MJ Shackles = 1/2 inch lift
'94+ V6 Dakota AX-15 = bolt in (but must use XJ bellhousing)

*view previous posts for more details.....and feel free to ask questions

Not sure how techy we want to go but here are a few more

Lebaron hood vents are always a favorite.
A ZJ pitman arm is a 1 inch drop over stock.
97+ mirrors are direct bolt in to older XJ's and allow you to fold them in on tight trails.
MJ's with buckets had brackets that allow you to tilt the seat forward and will bolt right up to older XJ seats (not sure about newer).
Dodge Ram vans brake lines are 12" longer for big lifts
ZJ gas tank skid can be modified to fit 97+
Most 4cylinder and v6 Xjs have 4.10 axles (some with 4.56)
96-98 ford taurus dual electric fan to replace the mechanical on the 4.0
350 or 351 power steering pump (for oversized tires) with a little welding
ZJ and WJ stock tranny coolers with stacked plates (even an upgrade for us with the stock fin style)
Camaro spring isolators give 1.5 inch lift in front
GM power antennas replace your broken XJ's with little modification
5spd crossmembers give 3/4 inch tcase drop on autos with no loss in ground clearance

and.......
You can convert the closed system to open without replacing your radiator by using the fill cap from a 4.7 durango or dakota, cutting it into your upper hose, and replace your bottle with an Mj overflow tank or any that fit. Then cap off or eliminate the T'ed lines in the heater core.

Happy Hunting

yeah the 2.5L 4cyl and 2.8L GM V6 cherokees (V6 was only in the old '80s cherokees) had different ratios than the regular 3.07 (4.0L, AX-15) and 3.55 (4.0L, AW4).....i've heard some had 3.73's. 4.10's, and some with the towing package had 4.56's......the only draw back is that those front ends may ave vacuum discos

can anyone confirm/deny this for sure?

Anyone know if a 97+ heater control unit (dashboard buttons) can be swapped into a +96

not a big fan of slidding bars, would rather have rotor buttons

Correct and correct. Sorry about the lack of info. Not positive on the discos though.

i think they do but the haynes manual is out in my XJ so i cant check. but IIRC you can do a rather simple manual control for that so no worries about the right vac stuff
