Bronco Tire Carrier...Its a "Good Thing"

Ok, I know its not a "real" write up, I didnt have the camera to document the build process, but never the less it may be an inspiration to someone else.

First of, I want to give props to Apostle for his carrier Which was my inspiration.

My carrier is off of a Bronco II

The mounts have substantial plates inside to distribute load. I have had "most" of my weight on the carrier (I weigh about 270) and the mounts do not give.

The only real Problem I ran into was that I mounted the carrier with the taillight out (for access to the inside of the rear fender) and I had a slight clearance issue......but nothing a cutoff wheel and some body filler couldn't fix.

I even got to retain the rear wiper!! I am going to extend the mount on the hatch on down a bit to make it into kinda a upside down T to gain 2 or 3 more mounting positions. (considering the hatch is made from fiber glass)

If anyone has a extra Dwindow....that would make it look so much better.....

Took the jeep to town today and went over some BIG holes....didnt bounce much at all, and made NO noise.

Total cost including the carrier from the local yard = about $20.00

Does look like a good investment. I'm trying to get that spare out of the back, dont really wanna put it on the roof. I'll have to hit up the local pick-n-pull.

I think someone needs to design an XJ specific carrier that mounts like this.

Hmmm.... maybe someone should e-mail <insert vendor here> and see if this is even a remote possibility. Love the Detours Tailbone tire carrier, but these could be a lot cheaper to produce, and fill a void that MANY of us want filled... rear swing out carrier on stock kit. If you only had to drill some holes, man...you could sell a metric buttload of these!!

OP, looks kool man, very tight!

Thats EXACTLY what I was thinking Even if it was a set of mounts that would allow use of another stock type carrier....like the bronco II or Blazer....

this is cool, i wonder if there is a way to get it more centered or on the left side. Seems like a big blind spot.

Hmmm I like it. I take it you wouldn't be able to keep the bumper end caps though.

Nope....I think you would be able to keep the stock bumper and endcaps....I ended up setting the carrier IN too far..and had to clearance the light a bit.....but thats what I get for doing my measuring with the light off the jeep...

Hey you should make mounts for the carrier and sell them. So we can just buy the swing and use your mounts. I would buy some (assuming you fix the tail light problem)

I thought about that.....however I really dont have the tools to do it....if I had a plasma cutter then I would make some templates, buy some 3/16 plate, weld it all together and ship it out.

I really think this is the way to go with a carrier...I personally think that its stronger and less likely to fatigue than a bumper mounted one.

Is there a possibility of rearranging the vertical part that looks like it's attached to the tube with clamps? This would lower the tire out of the field of view of the rear window a bit. I don't know if it would drop it down too low, or if it would interfere with the rear bumper or not. Another problem would be if the latching mechanism relies on it.
