Is it the broken fan shroud?
So I have been dealing with really weird cooling issues. I keep overheating, first I blew the bottle. Then the jeep overheated and caused the new bottle to expand into a balloon. Now the temp fluctuates like none other. I realized that maybe the top of the fan shroud for the mech fan, its broken off. This might be causing the fan to not be able to cool the engine or rad good enough causing the erratic temp changes. Am I right? I never had problems without the shroud but the temps outside have been getting hotter.

Does it over heat at a higher speeds? I'm pretty sure the fan doesnt really do much driving down the road, so if its over heating while driving this its probally something else.
Did you upgrade the cooling system?

If you have the stock cooling system I was wondering if your reservoir tank's overflow pipe was plugged to cause it to balloon out like that. Maybe that's what they do when they're overheated like that but that was my first thought.

It does the opposite you say, it heats up when it is slowing down and when it is stopped. Once I hit the gas, the guage drops back down to 180. Ohh yeah, it has a 180 t stat cause that is what it has always had since I owned it. The gauge fluctuates alot between 180 and 230 or so....sometimes gets way up towards 260 and then I have to shut it off but if I go easy on the gas I can keep it going up to 210 and the back doen to 180 once I go.

Have you replaced any of your cooling system yet?? Thermostat, H2O Pump, Fan Clutch, Coolant Temp. Sending Unit, Radiator, Serpentein Belt??

Everything works fine...new thermostat, fan switch works, temp sender "old", Might replace it, water pump works, serp belt fine "Not broken" and turns everything. The radiator holds coolant and flushes clear, did two flushes since I have had these issues. I am convinced its the shroud because its not directing the air to the rad, I can actually cool the jeep down considerably by turing on the ac on max and cold. This makes me think its an air delivery issue.

The fan clutch is fine cause there is resistance when pushing the fan and the fan spins fine once the engine kicks on in all the rpm's. The jeep ran fine without the rad shroud but that was before the outside temps went up so...

Have a similar issue myself...
I've been fighting a slow, creeping high temp at idle for some time now. I took a look and the fan shround was hanging down a little low on the right side (broken screw), and probably just hitting the fan ever so slightly, causing an uneven flow and spin. I ziptied it back up for a temp fix and it definitely slowed down the time it took to overheat in traffic by a good margin. It still overheats and I'm working on finding the problem, however it takes a lot longer to get up there and has saved me quite a few times!

well just 2 answer your initial question, the broken fan shroud isn't the reason
we took off the fan shroud on our 89, and it doesn't overheat![]() |

if you turn your ac on and the jeep gets COOLER, you need to look at your electric fan, and make sure that its also coming on once the temp gets above 215 or so and not just when you turn on the ac. id be willing to bet this could quite possibly be your coolant temp sensor that tells your electric fan when to kick on. try wiring up the electric fan to a manual switch and when it gets too hot, kick it on. if it is still getting too hot, then i would look at your mech fan. maybe the fan clutch?... id do a dual electric fan set up. thats just my 2 cents.

I owned an 89 Laredo that had almost the same problems when purchased. I replaced almost everything in the cooling system (expansion bottle,cap,3 row radiator, water pump, heater control valve, and hoses) and still had issues. After "burping" the cooling system aprox 8 times and thinking about replacing the fan clutch, it dawned on me that I had not replaced the cooling fan switch located in the radiator. This was the final fix for my system, it was not cycling the aux fan at the same temp everytime. I am not sure if you have replaced this part, but it could be an inexpensive fix. Good luck with it.

A new fan shroud would help it pull more air thru the radiator, but I would replace the fan clutch, even though it feels tight and looks to be turning fine. if it's more than five years old a new one will make a world of difference. I just replaced the clutch fan on my WJ, which was tight and looked like it was working fine, but now the WJ runs 10 to 15 degrees cooler at idle and doesn't creep up like it used to.

I have a new electric fan switch installed, the next things I will get are the coolant temp sensors and the fan clutch even though it spins the fan fine which confuses me a lot.

"if you turn your ac on and the jeep gets COOLER, you need to look at your electric fan, and make sure that its also coming on once the temp gets above 215 or so and not just when you turn on the ac"
It was my understanding that the electric fan only came on when the ac is on. Even if it was suppossed to turn on when it hit 215 the darn electric fan switch located in the rad is new so....

According to this link that I found on another thread, the elec fan should turn on if the ac is on or off. It is controlled by a relay, this is not what is happening in my case. At overheating temps, the elec fan just sits there. I am going to pick up a relay tomorrow. Hopefully this fixes my issue.
