Brake caliper size change in years?

I am swapping axles in my 96 XJ, I picked up a, what the guys said, was a 98 HPD30 and built it up. I was swapping it in today and when I went to put the calipers on from my 96, the pads were a good 1/2"-3/4" to long. Went to autozone with the pad on the piston side and according to the desk jockeys computer, all pads between all years are the same. So went back and at this point, I needed to get the jeep back on the ground so I took a grinder to the caliper mounts and made the pads fit only to realize the slider bolt for the calipers on my 96 is a whole lot smaller than the bolt holes for my 98 axle. So went to look at the axle that came out of my 96 and the mounts to the caliper are actually part of the knuckles where as the mounts on my 98 axle are removable..wtf?

Anyone know if there is a year cut off where they changed this? If so, should I just pick up some calipers for a 98?

TIA

Quick fix would be to swap knuckles with your 96?

I am thinking about doing just that, the reason I kept the knuckles on the axle for the 98 was because I broke one of the 12mm bolts and I cut it out and took some extra metal off the mount hole. But we have a couple D30s around the shop so I will see if I can find one.

then the knuckles on your 98 axle are pre-90. they had two piece knuckles and different brakes. could be an entire housing from those years.

Completely stock, and keeping it that way...

This. It has to be an axle out of a '84-'89 XJ, or at least the knuckles are from that era.

All front axles '90 -> '01 have the caliper mounts integrated to the knuckles, '84-'89 have a caliper bracket that bolts onto the knuckles (ie. like WJ brakes have).

Steering Knuckles:

1) 1984 to 1989 - AMC Steering Knuckles. Left and right side steering knuckles have different part numbers and only accept AMC calipers.

2) 1990 to 2001 - Chrysler Steering Knuckles. Left and right side steering knuckles have different part numbers and only accept Chrysler calipers.

Any XJ AMC or XJ Chrysler steering knuckle will fit on any XJ D30. Remember, unit hubs type, and brake caliper type, must match the steering knuckle type, Chrysler vs. AMC.

Brake Calipers:

1) 1984 to 1989 - AMC Brake Calipers. Left and right sides calipers have different part numbers and only fit on AMC steering knuckles.
2) 1990 to 2001 - Chrysler Brake Calipers Left and right sides calipers have different part numbers.

AMC and Chrysler calipers do not interchange, they must be mounted on the corresponding AMC or Chrysler steering knuckle.

I had this SAME issue with my XJ when going to rebuild the calipers. It was a 92 D30HP with 1984 knuckles and calipers. I even got the same tapered bearing hubs.. lol.

Nice, yeah they were a ***** to get off since my axle was so bent from the accident. I couldnt get the pass side shaft out it got stuck in the bend. I had to cut the ball joint off.
