BEDLINE FRONT BUMPER & BUMPER THUMPER
well... i dont have work today and am bored as hell so i decided to play with my heep. i have quite a number of scratches on my front bumper and also have noticed some rusting and paint flaking on my smittybilt bumper thumper (if you look in my sig those pics are outdated but the bumper setup is what I am currently running). my question is to prep the bumper for the spray on bedliner what exactly should i do do? should i just sand the surface and then apply the bedliner or should i go as far to get paint remover and remove the paint and then sand and then paint (i have a classic so the bumper is painted same as the body). also what should i do with the bumper thumper? the paint they used is flaking and there is some rust where I have run over fun things likes trees. any imput would be helpful!
thanks, eric

oh... forgot to mention that I will also be doing some minor trimming to make my new 31 MTRs fit a little better with the RE budget boost I should be getting later this week from homerscj7. ahh and one more thing... should i go ahead and order some front extended bumpstops... do you think i will need them (im thinking maybe 2inch just to be safe)?

I use to own a spray on bedliner company with my dad. To prep truck beds (and for your bumpers) you need to rough up the surface first. Spray on bedliner material is generally designed to adhere to a painted surface. We used an 80 grit paper, then blew off the dust with an air gun, then wiped it down really good with denatured alcohol before spraying.
I have sprayed Jeep bumpers before and they came out great. In fact, I also sprayed my TJ flares which came out perfect. They were great for off-roading. I ran them up against trees and did nothing to them. Good luck !

[QUOTE=Cryosis] By the time your done sanding most if not all of the paint will be gone. QUOTE]
Again, you really do not want to get rid of all of the paint because the spray on material is designed to adhere to the painted surface. Whenever I sprayed bare metal I always used a primer first so the material could stick to that.

thanks guys! just got the end caps and my bumper thumper off (man that was a biatch especially in this heat), and now am in the process of trimming the endcaps and sanding everything. i decided to leave the metal center bumper piece in place and just gonna paint it in place, masking the front of the vehicle of course. this is turning out to be a fun little project, hope it turns out well! this had got me toying with the idea of doing the rear bumper as well since it is all dinges and scratched up from moving kegs in and out, hahaha!
eric ps as soon as everything is back in place i will take pics! i will also take pics of my new driving lights i installed on my safari rack, dvd player, painted dash trim piece, rca jack in the rear of the center console and some other things i have recently done!

I saw a post a week or so ago in the Cherokee forum where a guy used bedliner on everything and did his whole vehicle. It really looked pretty good.

You know you want to....
I've got my truck about 90% stripped to be bedlined. I sure hope it works. The salesman in the store gave me a very funny look when he said: "How long is your box?" and I replied "I'm not doing the box, I'm doing the whole f'ing thing" |

hahahaha... well i just finished it up today by installing the bumper endcaps and the bumper thumper back on and my driving lights! looks pretty good, just need some tow hooks on the front to tie me over until i pick up one of Rustys Prerunner bumpers. i trimmed the end caps a lil to fit the larger tires going on soon and it looks pretty good. i think all my neighbors in my aprtment complex here at school think im a weirdo, haha. anyways i should have pics up today once i get a hold of my roomates digi.

I want to do this to my rear bumper. It is pretty banged up from loading/unloading stuff and then I dinged it good last week hooking up my trailer. This would be a pretty nice mod. Is there any way to match the stock paint? I mean, can I get a "Patriot Blue" bedliner paint? Also, any way you could do this to the plastic door trim? I have been noticing that the trim takes most of the door dings which is great, but after years of being beat on by stupid people who can't open their doors without hitting the vehicle next to them (sorry for the rant) and the sun fading, they are looking pretty rough. It would be nice to give them a nice new look.

Looks like there aren't any dealers in Minnesota, at least not according to their webpage. Last edited by Rand McNally; 07-27-2005 at 01:38 PM.. |

Doing the same here...
I wanted to trash my stock bumper with this thumper on it, but funds are low. The thumper was rusting around almost every edge, so I decided to strip it bare before repainting. That powder coating (or is it paint) is hell to take off. Took me 2 cans of paint stripper and 1 hour with a sanding disc on an angle grinder. What's the difference between truck bed coating and undercoating? Is undercoating softer? I have a can of undercoating and thinking of painting it with that...wondering if it'll look like crap...
