BAD grinding sound

just got done installing my 3.5" RE full leaf packs and noticing some grinding noises coming from my tranny yoke whenever i let off the gas. not when i accelerate, just when i let off. it looks great but i want to fix this problem. also, could i use a transfercase drop kit on my tranny? i do excessive prerunning in the desert now so i need this fixed. thanks.

Have you checked to make sure it isn't binding? It could be the u-joint maxing out and the slip-joint grinding on the yoke...... though I'd think you'd notice that pretty quickly.

If you have a 2001 and the RE 3.5 (which probably gave you 5...) you probably should be lookint into a SYE.

I would say make sure that the as$ end is totally settled. If you are at much more than 3" than you are going to need the extra hardware mentioned.

btw i am in 2wd (i know you guys bash, but i actually put it to use in the desert so just lemme do my thing) so thats why i was wondering about the tranny drop, not the t-case. if i lowered the transmission crossmember would the tranny move down too, or just put space in between the tranny-crossmember and the tranny?

lowering the tranny crossmember should have the same effect. I personally don't have any experience with them however. If they are located farther forward then the transfer case one is normally, then I would imagine you might want to go with a smaller drop since the angles would change.

im pretty sure its in the same place, just the 2wd tranny is longer. ive measured the distance on my buddys 4x xj and its pretty much the same, give or take .5". so i guess ill get a t-case drop then.

If I'm not mistaken, when I was checking out teh wife's 01 2wd the trans brace was in the same spot as the 4wd. The trans brace is referred to as the TC brace, but it's the same.

The 2wd just have a longer slip yoke housing instead of the TC slip yoke housing. A trans drop should do the trick. What axle, D35C or the 8.25? Check the slip yoke where the DS meets it and look for contact patches on the ears.

My 8.25 was binding at about 4" so that more than likely is the culprit. Check the the DS at the yoke and see if you can find any wear spots. Shouldn't be too bad, they were just grazing eachother on mine, but sounded horrible inside.

You degree shimmed the axle yet?
