Awesome radio reception. Antenna or radio?

Saturday we drove up to the mountains and went hiking. The whole way up, I was receiving my favorite radio station which normally fades out a good 10-15 miles earlier. I was amazed.

The radio is the stock cassette deck which, until this weekend, I was planning on swapping with a newer one but now I am not so sure.

Is the radio that good or is it the antenna?

We enter the zone of impressive numbers when we consider the onetime cost of the 1996 floods ($27 billion, but still cheaper than the 1998 floods), the annual direct losses due to desertification ($42 billion), and the annual losses due to water and air pollution ($54 billion). The combination of the latter two items alone costs China the equivalent of 14% of its GDP each year." - Jared Diamond, Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed

I doubt it. Other cars I have owned have not been able to pick up this station so far out. The station simulcasts all throughout the area on different frequencies and until now I have been stuck with 10-20 miles dead zones between towers. No longer.

Is the stock radio that good?

It's the antenna! I don't have one, and I have major issues getting reception.

I must need a new antenna cos there's static in every local radio station pretty much...it's not a clear reception, hence the reason I listen to CDs in my car...

Have you checked the antenna cable junction that is inside the passenger's side kick panel? That junction is notorious for failing (it is an ill-designed, spring loaded assembly), when it does, radio reception will be poor, at best.

Thanks mecompco for that tip. I'll need to check it out. My reception has been bad since I bought my XJ.

Has anyone ever tried replacing their antenna? Ours is a power one that is stuck about half way up and is bent from the automatic car wash. I would like to replace it with one of those smaller rubberized antennas that flex easier. It works ok, just looks bad.

My stock radio picks up stations well, but output is terrible. I think those old fashioned metal stick anteneas are pretty good. Years ago I saw a booster for the antenea, maybe you've got one of those. That would transfer to a new radio anyway.

As for the guy who can't pick up anything, I'd say your antenea is unplugged somewhere.

Good. I'd hate it if I upgraded my radio and reception went down.

Antenna replacement is pretty straightforward. You must remove the inner fender splashshield to access the antenna base and cable assy. The decorative multi-point nut on the base top is removed (with a 12 pt. wrench), and the antenna slides down and out from the inside of the antenna.

The trick with an XJ is finding a replacement antenna whose base will fit the small and angled surfaced present on the XJ fender. The aftermarket generic antennas won't fit.

I noticed that when I first got my XJ I can get radio stations a lot farther away then I have ever been able to in other cars same cd player too. So I'm going to go with antenna.
