The Aw4 Transmission

AW4 - 4 speed automatic, electronically controlled - manufactured by Aisin

Im kinda confused, I have two who both know alot more about Jeeps than i personally do right now. One is saying that the Aw4 Jeep Automatic Transmission is Sh^%%y. While the other guy says it is awesome, and that it is probably more durable than the 4.0 I6 engine. This second guy works at a Jeep Dealership and said his friend has been there for 20 years and has seen 7 trannies come in messed up and all they did was just replace them.(to complicated to fix i guess) So i am just wondering how tough is the Aw4 auto transmission? any comments or stories of anybodys trials with it?

The AW4 is a very stong trans, usually lasting over 300,000 miles with the most basic of maintenance.

The AW4 is BULLETPROOF, the one in mine outlasted the engine. 304,000km on the tranny, 130,000km on the motor. Same with my bro's. His is up over 300,000km and we've never ever had a problem with them. I'd have to say that the AW4 would probably outlast the motor and thats saying a lot. Tell your first friend he is a -=-=-=-=in idot and doesn't know jack -=-=-=-= about jeeps

i have to say it a very reluiable transmission, for a while my front seal was leaking, and the transmission fluid would get low, and through all that time it lasted evn though i did keep it checked, besides that have had no problems with it

The only broblem they regularly have is the OD selinoids. The wires get worn out and short, or simply wear out. Not a mojor problem either way. Less than $100 to replace, and a simple cut, splice, solder, & shrink tape for the bad wires. I currently have one going out, but until I can't even get it to shift into OD at all it's only a nuisence.

Yup...
Bullet Proof.
I thought mine was going out...then i figured out that when i pulled the throttle sensor i screwed up and didn't put the sensor lever under the throttle lever...so it never registered anything..put it back in right...Tranny went right back to normal. Popped into OD just like it should.

The AW4 and 4L I6 are a very good match and both will outlast the bodies on the XJ's with regular maintence

It is a near bullet proof transmission when used behind the 4.0l, if it is kept cool. There are much better autos out there, but the AW4 isn't the worst.

My dad has 300,000+ on his original AW4. With regular care these transmissions are amazing!

Looks like I will have to agree with the majority here. Mines at 209,xxx miles and it is runnin strong like it was new. If I can remember right it can handle up to 500hp no problem and is the Auto used in the later model Supras. That says a lot right there. I dont remember anyone saying anything bad about the AW4 except Jeep Haters who dont know squat.
