Ok I tapped into the wire and it works, just it's opposite of what I want it to do. When the switch is off it turns the fan on but when I flip the switch on it turns it off.
I have a wire going to "ground" and the tapped wire going to "load". I also have a "supply" prong on there too. The switch has an LED on it. So what do I do to get the switch to work correctly. Also after tapping the wire it kicked on the check engine light.

Rotate the switch 180
The LED in the switch is wired in reverse, because it's designed for other purposes than what we're trying to do. I've run into the same problemo. Maybe when the world unthaws, I'll mess with it some more.
I believe the CEL is due to a ground backfeed caused by the switch. Something about a resistor will cure this. Look earlier in the thread for a possible fix. This should only happen on 96+ because they are OBDII. The OBDI systems could give to poos about it.

Thank you SO much!! This is my first mod to my jeep, and is something that I have been wanting to do for quite a while.
I installed my switch to the panel that is left of the steering column (beside the rear-defroster switch). For the ground wire, I simple used the screw that was right below the panel =)

I have a 2001 and I have successfully wired the cooling fan to be controlled by an override switch or by the computer with temp and a/c and I also wired in a master kill switch to prevent it from coming on when in deeper water holes. No CEL either... It all works off the ground from the pcm to the relay. if you cut into that wire and take the pcm signal to another relay before the fan relay and have that new relay send the ground signal to the fan relay it will fool the pcm into thinking everything is normal (no CEL). The ground from the new relay will trigger the fan relay with temp and a/c. On that ground wire you can wire in a switch to send that wire ground to manually turn the fan on and also a master kill switch to prevent it from coming on in deeper water holes... sounds long winded but it took me a long time to think it up and it works perfectly.... basic idea is to put in another relay to trick the computer into thinking it's the fan relay but really it will just send a ground to the fan relay when it is triggered by the pcm... I will work on drawing up a diagram... No diodes... pcm is isolated with new relay...
someone on another forum took my idea and made a nice wiring diagram which he did on his Jeep too. This is his diagram of what I did for my fan...

Here's my first switch panel:

Here's my current switch panel:
The black switch on my current panel is a three position switch. In the up position the fan is always on and the left red LED is on. In the down position the fan is always off and the right LED blinks. In the center (off) position the fan is on "auto" and does whatever the factory computer tells it to do.

Veeery clever solution with blinking diode on fan switched off - reminds not to forget switching it back on

You've gotta explain this in detail so I can do this.
