Auxillary Fan Operation
Anyone know at what temp the electric fan should engage on an '88 engine with the 4 litre? I don't mean running with the A/C on or cycling with the Defrost on. I just mean when the main fan needs some additional cooling help.
I think my gauge is inaccurate as my fan kicks in at around 75-80 Celsius (167-176 F) according to the gauge. My first thought was that my T-stat was stuck open, but the engine bay (and the engine + hoses) get really hot at this temp, so it's probably my gauge.

190? For shizzle? Sounds a little low to me since the normal operating temp is around 210 isnt it?

Mine kicks on at around 212 (looks a little over 210). I have heard the temp varies due to the amount of thread sealent on the sensor (just what I have read).

Remember that not only is the fan cooling the rad but also moves air under the hood as well. Really need at low speeds and high stress like off. Cooler under hood temps can extend battery, belts, sensor life. With an alum intake manifold it's probably best to keep a little air moving across it so it stay cooler and not over heat the incoming air or, more power. Lots of people put manual switches on them and just leave them on when offing. I can see lots of good reason it kicks on a little sooner than a street cars would. It's a lot easier and smarter to keep it cool them cool it down after the temp reaches melt down.
