Automatic Transmission fluid change, and Transfer Case fluid change questions.
My Haynes manual says to change both the filter and fluid for the automatic transmission at the same time. I had both changed about 10,000 miles ago, but I only want to change the fluid this time. Seems like I remember seeing a drain bolt underneath there the last time I changed my oil. Can I just drain and refill using that drain bolt. Also what torque is the bolt supposed to be at, I understand it's in sheet metal and too much will strip it.
And, for my transfer case fluid change, the Haynes manual says to drive for 15 mintues in stop and go traffic with 4wd engaged, including reverse to warm it up. Is this recommended? Thanks, my Jeep is in my sig.

you don't need to change the tranny screen (not really a filter). mine had 140,000 miles on it, and the last time it was done was around 30,000 miles. so in 110,000 miles, it was just as clean as the new one.
you can buy a suction pump and hose that will suck it all out, but i always just loosen the bottom drain plug, let it drain, then put it back and fill them up.

Cool, my transmission has been shifting funny for a while now, so hopefully 2-3 drain/refills will bring it back to smoother operation. It's only got 101,000 miles on it, so I wonder if it's really the transmission. We'll see what a fluid drain/refill does. I'm thinking about trading it in, and want it operating as good as it can be.

when i changed my TC fluid i just drove around for about 30minutes (driving home from work) and then i was in reverse for one minute. The TC is a pretty easy change, only take about 15 minutes.

I work at a quick lube and this is my specialty. You can drain your tranny fluid from that drain in the pan and fill it back up, but it wont get nearly all of the fluid out (40-50% if you have an AW4). If you want to try and get it all, you'll have to drain it, flush it, fill it, and run it about 3 times. It amounts to a large amount of tranny fluid if you do it that way. You def. don't need to change your filter after only 10,000 miles. I'd say to take it to a trusty quick lube or shop and have them hook it up to a tranny machine and suck 100% of it out. The machine gets it out of the lines, pan, inners of the trans, and cooler. It usually runs about $80 or $90, but it gets it done right. DON'T TAKE IT TO A LARGE CHAIN QUICK LUBE STORE LIKE JIFFY LUBE! They do a halfass job. I'd really reccomend putting in a bottle of Lucas transmission stabilizer, too. If you're having any funny shifting that isn't electronic, this stuff usually helps out noticeably by knocking off the glaze on the clutches in the torque converter. As far as the tcase goes, drain it, flush what left of the old fluid out of it, and fill it up to the top again. New Process doesn't call for running your 4wd or reverse for an alloted amount of time to break in the fluid. Change it and go. Hope this helps.
