Though I love my automatic, I read your whole writeup. Very good job, I'm sure in the future many many people will be able to do this conversion because of your very clear write up.
Very nice contribution to the Jeeper Community.

Yes there is linkage modification, dont worry its not too bad Anyways its updated in the original post under Reassembly Part II

What yard you going to? Pull-N-Save in Aurora? Man I miss that place... could always count on finding at least 4 or 5 good XJ's out there and prices were great.
For everyone else out there, here is an example of their pricing: WEEKLY SPECIALS for JULY 8,9, & 10th any REAR END - $27.99 any CYLINDER HEAD W/CAM - $17.99 any CYLINDER HEAD WO/CAM - $7.99 Craziness... you could potentially get a D44 for under $30 (I saw three in about two years... slim chance, but possible).

Great write-up. Probably shouldn't have read it because now i'm 99% going to do it
![]() I searched, but nothing came up that answered me, so I fugured i'd ask in this thread, instead of starting yet another one. I have a 95 xj, and i see the punch holes, however i have 3, so i'm just assuming the middle one is the center of the hole and the other 2 are the bolt holes. However, these punches are just an inch above the large fuse box and its connector inside the engine bay and under the dash. I couldn't see from your pictures, but is the fusebox located there for you as well? Or for anyone whose done this on a later XJ, was there any clearence issues with the fuse box? Also, i'll swap it if i must, but i'm kinda attached to my NP242, so were there ANY manuals that had the correct splines? If not, does anyone make an adapter, or am I fixed into using a 231 ( not neccesarily bad) ? |

Also, now that i think about it, and maybe yours is different because it's RENIX, but wouldnt the OBD1 computer have a fit when i hit overdrive speeds? I'd probably have to get the ECM from the manual cherokee as well.

Can someone tell me if there is a difference in the manual transmission or general systems of the '97-'99 Cherokees and the '00-'01?
I guess what I am asking is, if I am looking for parts to do a manual transmission swap into my 2000 Cherokee, will the AX-15 and other manual transmission parts from any '97-'01 work or should I be looking only for '00-'01 parts? I have been browsing some transmission parts on ebay and some of the AX-15 listings say "will work for '89-'99" and I am wondering what if any differences there are between '99 and '00-'01? I would appreciate some input if anyone knows. Thanks! |

I saw no mention of the pilot bearing. Or maybe I just missed it.
You DID install a pilot bearing, right? ![]() |

I thought he said it came with the clutch kit, and he installed when installing the clutch?

That would be the throw out bearing. Different from a pilot bearing. Just wondering because it wasn't in the description or on the parts list.

P.S. The more research i do, i'm pretty sure the Crossmembers are the same for Auto vs. Manual, atleast on the later models. Looks like the AX-15 just uses a plate that kinda bridges the "gap" between the tranny and crossmember.
