I could go either way. Auto's are a hell of a lot more common here though, so that's what I got.

A manual jeep would be like driving a tractor. If its a car, manual definitely. Trucks, auto.

I always opt for the manual, but since the XJ I drive now was given to me as a fixer upper, I had no choice but to take the auto. No complaints, however.

For on and off road I like the auto. However, there is a down side to the auto trans. when trying to crawl down a hill a little slower. This isn't a huge difference, but my TJ was a manual and I can notice the difference. The XJ brakes will just have to get a little beefier if the tires get real beefy.

depends on the tranny.

the AW4 is the greatest automatic ever made, and it is BETTER than any stock XJ manual.

the ONLY way I'd give up my AW4 would be if it got replaced with an NP435, SM465 or NV4500. other than that, -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= the manual, the AW4 can be rewired to behave just like a manual whenever you want it to (including torque convertor lockup to gain compression braking)

i persoanlly prefer manual just because it's more fun (that and the fact that i haven't driven auto in so long i tend to go push the clutch in auto and hit that "wide break" on accident thrusting everyone forward ). no offense, but auto gets way too boring for me. also since for some reason just about NO ONE up here knows how to drive manual, it makes it look even more impressive

if you are a girl, then auto is ok, but it takes all the fun out of a jeep and there is no challenge or driver skill

When I drive an auto I don't feel like I'm the one controling the car so much as I'm sharing the automatic experience. You don't really drive an automatic...you more or less "trick" it into doing what you want. The really cool thing about an automatic is that it's really easy to shift. (Dramatization) lets say you hit ice around a corner, and all you want to do is downshift, but instead you shift up, casuing further loss of controll. As you careen down the road towards a group of nuns pushing baby carriages (daycare, seeing as how nuns are celibate), you wonder what would have happend if you had been driving a manual. Would you have maintained control??? perhaps. But if this helps anyone break their nasty habbit of automatic transmissions... great. God bless manual transmissions

This is all in good fun... i hope.

if a manual isn't a royal pain in the cawk, you're not really wheelin

I like a challenge of the terrain, and with the chopping I did on my XJ, I don't have room for a clutch pedal anymore

Welp, I just test drove an automatic - also the first time I ever drove a Cherokee and I have to say I am extremely impressed. I love the low end torque! This more than sealed the deal for me - I know for sure I want an XJ now! Everything felt so comfortable - sight line, seats, arm rest, controls, handling and the responsive engine! Now if I can just sell that Volvo! (I don't want an upside down loan, ya know?)
