Auto transmission not down shifting

Just started yesterday. My 1996 Cherokee doesn't seem to shift back down to first gear after being up in third or overdrive. I noticed it after exiting the interstate yesterday. It does have 227K miles on it, but I've never had any problem with the tranny. Is it likely something simple, or am I looking at replacing the transmission?

It could be the speed sensor that's attached on back of transfer case. Could be loose, dirty or needs replacing. This is one place you might start.

Sounds like it could also tranny solenoids also, i had that happen to me and it was not shifting right either. Sometimes wouldn't downshift or shift up. This could be what you need Solenoid kit, A140 / A240 / 241E 1983-UP Makco Transmission Parts It does not take too long to do, took me a few hours, you just need to take the transmission pan off and the solenoids are right there.
