Auto Tranny Fluid Check, Park or Neutral?

I just bought a 1988 XJ a few days ago and when I checked the tranny fluid last night the dipstick said it needs to be in park. But on my old 1999 and 2000 XJ with the auto tranny it said the tranny needs to be in neutral. Think the dipstick might be the wrong one. Any ideas? Thanks

It makes NO DIFFERENCE. From a hydraulic perspective, "Neutral" and "Park" are the same.

Exactly right. Which means that there is no reason not to use "Park."

And if you use Neutral, make sure to set the PARKING BRAKE!!!
