Im probably going to run an aussie in my rear 44, but in a few months ill be re gearing. So rather then buying a new carrier i was figuring that i may just run the "thick" gears (4.56) and save a few bucks on a new carrier. Is there any difference strength wise in doing it this way? ANy input is welcome.
Sometimes installing a lunchbox locker can be very difficult and somtimes impossible with "thick" gears. The thick gears can make tight clearances even more difficult...for instance. You can't install thick gears and a Powertrax No-slip in a D30....unless you remove the ring gear....
I didn't say anything about a D30..? I'll be running an arb in the front when I re-gear. Basically i'm thinking about installing an aussie in the rear right now, then in a few months im going to regear, and run 4.56's and go to an arb up front. I was considering using thick cut gears in the rear rather then buying a new carrier and switching the aussie over. I just wanted to know if there was any downside to running thick cut gears, like carrier failure or something..
I prefer thick gears. The ring is stronger. Notice that when Jeep introduced the Rubicon line they use thick gears from the factory in those dana 44 axles.
I think I paid $45 for a new one from 4wd.com. You have to removed the ring gear on a d44 anyway to put the aussie in because the pin won't clear the gear teeth.
Note that I said the ring is thicker and stronger. Another factor to consider is how big the pinion gear is. For instance, in the series 4.11, 4.10 and 4.09, the 4.09 has the biggest pinion gear and is the strongest of that set. Low ratio gears that fit series 4 carriers get really thin as they get into ratios like 5.13. I don't see any advantage to a thin ring except the possibility that you might find one cheap. The other advantage of thick gears is that everybody is looking for series 4 carriers. So you can find series 3 carriers/lockers/limited slips for much less. The demand is not there. For some reason, the population at large has not "discovered" thick gears yet. I hope it stays that way.
