Why not just run flex tubing from the air box to the cowl? Then you don't have to cut into the top of the cowl... You would be able to leave the stock filter attached and not have to put one into the cowl?

Well he probably has a huge hole in the side of his stock airbox from his snorkel, plus eliminating the stock box opens up a ton of room under the hood, and lastly I think this method ultimately makes for a much cleaner setup.

That rubber piece is a grommet that came with the ARB snorkel. I moved it here from the other large hole I cut back then. You could probably find something similar that would work, such as weatherstripping or body trim.

#1 - I would have to relocate my washer bottle yet again since I am using one from an older XJ that is located between the stock airbox and brake booster.

#2 - I would have to cut another hole in the stock airbox and seal another one up. Plus while I don't have anything in its place at the moment, it is nice to get rid of the stock airbox all together.

#3 - This way is much cooler, don't you think?

the grommet for the firewall looks the same as one for a 3 inch light like used on the ear end on semi trucks. would it be ok to run flex hose all the way rather than the metal hose?

i did pretty much the same thing in this thread. it gets a little hot, i personally wouldnt trust the tubing all the way because of the heat, the metal tube is actually cheaper than the flex tubing, not to metion the flex tubing isnt long enough to strech from the intake into the cowl. and the more flex tubing the better the chance for it to rip or tear.

How do you think this setup would work in an area that sees a lot of snow in the winter?

I just figured it would be easier to install the valve cover breather in the flex but I see your point. how did yall install it on the metal pipe? weld a fitting?

Cowl snorkels have been proven to work fine in the rain. In Eric's version, directly above the cowl is not exposed to the weather because the plastic does not have holes on the passenger side.
